A family tomb dating from 1592 and a church of Gothic origin with a Baroque rebuilding history reveal different aspects of the town’s past. They are joined by the river landscape, cultural events and a cycling route that passes through Postřelmov. If you are looking for accommodation in the town, you can plan your stay around whether architecture and history, cultural life, or the landscape and cycling are your main interests.

River landscape between the Desná and the Morava

The Desná joins the Morava in the municipality of Postřelmov. The plain is characterized by fertile fields and meadows surrounded by wooded hills, with the Jeseníky Mountains forming the backdrop. The town’s landscape is thus shaped by waterways, open agricultural land and wooded heights. Those interested in the surrounding area will find a different perspective here from that offered by the churches and historic buildings.

Tomb, church and chapels

The late Renaissance family tomb of the Bukůvka family dates from 1592 and is considered an exceptional monument of its kind in Moravia. Its portal is decorated with notable reliefs and features a masterfully wrought Renaissance grille. The crypt contains the mummified remains of Zikmund Bukůvka, his wife Barbora Okrouhlická, Zikmund’s nephew Bernard and an unknown girl. The tomb thus combines a distinctive architectural form with specific names from the family’s history.

The Church of St Matthew was originally a Gothic building dating from the 14th century. After the devastating fire of 1665, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style. Its restored interior includes the main altar of St Matthew and a ceiling painting of the Last Supper. Its architectural history therefore spans its Gothic origins, the fire and the Baroque reconstruction; the furnishings belong to an interior restored at a later date.

The Procházka Chapel, also known as the Chapel of St Procopius, was built in 1696 on the road from Postřelmov to Chromeč and was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is considered one of the oldest early Baroque chapels in Moravia. When the parish Church of St Matthew was rebuilt in 1853, services were held in this chapel. Its history thus combines an early phase of construction with a temporary religious function.

Distinct from this is the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Kaple Nanebevzetí Panny Marie): it is a brick building with a square floor plan and a semicircular apse. The statue of St John of Nepomuk is another historic work of art in the town; the Baroque sandstone sculpture dates from 1732. Jursův statek adds a farmstead to the town’s architectural heritage: the listed farm dates from 1837. The educator and schoolbook publisher Jan Jursa, who lived from 1853 to 1938, lived there.

Cultural life and a cycling route through Postřelmov

The Postřelmov Cultural Centre hosts concerts, film and theatre performances, exhibitions and events for children. Another part of the town’s cultural heritage is the Markovice folklore ensemble, founded in 1953. It draws on folkloric material from the northernmost part of Haná and is dedicated to preserving traditional folk culture. The name “Postřelmovský Venoušek” also comes up in accounts of the town’s history: a find was given this name after it was discovered in 2003 during a rescue archaeological investigation carried out as the bypass was being built.

The “Na kole okolím Zábřeha I.” cycling route runs from Rovensko via Postřelmov. Before reaching the town, you can turn onto a paved farm track that goes around Postřelmov to the Chapel of St Procopius. The route then continues along Hradecká Street to cycling route 6231 and Postřelmov railway station. Check the route before setting out, as conditions can change. Postřelmov lies on the line between Zábřeh and Šumperk and has good road and rail connections.
