Velká Polom combines historic buildings with cycling routes that differ in their course and character. The water tower shapes the panorama of the upper part of the village, and sports facilities are also part of the local offering. You can tailor your stay to historic sites, cycling or sports activities.

Cultural Monuments and Architectural History

The founding of the Church of St. Wenceslas by the Přemyslids dates back to the late 13th century. The church and parish complex are listed immovable cultural monuments in Velká Polom. Thus, both the church’s early history and the complex as a whole reflect the cultural character of the village.

The ruins of the Milotička water fortress offer another historical point of interest. It has been documented under this name since 1486; in 1573, it was remodelled in the Renaissance style under the Pražmů of Bílkova. The dates refer to different stages: 1486 marks the first record of the name, while 1573 marks the later remodelling. Four single-storey wings enclose a rectangular courtyard. The water fortress is also an important archaeological site. Its history, architecture and archaeological significance come together here, and the site cannot be reduced to just one of these perspectives.

Another historic building is the chapel at Hájek. It stands on the road between Velká Polom and Hrabyně, near a small woodland called Hájek. Its origins can be distinguished precisely: the chapel was commissioned in 1905 and built in 1906 by Josef Urbiš, a master builder from Mokré Lazce. Its setting, commission, year of construction and builder all provide concrete points of reference.

The Věžový vodojem water tower stands at the highest point of the upper part of the village and shapes Velká Polom’s distinctive panorama. While the water fortress is associated with its courtyard and history of remodelling, the tower stands out primarily for its position in the village landscape. It provides a prominent landmark in the upper part of the village.

Sports and Cycling

In the eastern part of Velká Polom, the sports complex has a football pitch and tennis courts. Volleyball can be played outdoors as well as in the school gym and sports hall. Another sporting activity is angling at the pond near MŠ U Rákosníčka. These options range from ball games at the sports complex to fishing at the named pond, each offering a different focus for planning your leisure time.

There are two cycling routes to choose from, each described differently. Cycle Route 6200 runs through Velká Polom from Háj ve Slezsku via the Čertův mlýn valley and continues towards Plesná. Its course can be identified by these places and the valley.

Another route runs south from the bus station in Velká Polom towards Krásné Pole. This cycle path is challenging, has a significant elevation gain and runs on gravel. At the border of Krásné Pole, it joins Cycle Route W by a rest stop and allows you to bypass road I/11 towards Ostrava.

When choosing a cycling route, both its direction and terrain profile matter. Route 6200 continues through the valley towards Plesná; for the route towards Krásné Pole, its challenging nature, elevation gain and gravel surface are important factors in planning. This lets you distinguish between the two options based on their specific courses, without assuming they have the same level of difficulty. If you would rather focus on culture, the church, water fortress and chapel represent buildings from different periods; if you want to cycle, you can choose a route based on its direction and character.
