Klimkovice brings together a Renaissance castle and distinctive church architecture with forest recreation areas and the spa profile of Sanatoria Klimkovice. This mix helps you choose your own focus when planning a trip: local history and exhibitions, paths through green spaces, or the history of spa and rehabilitation treatments each reveal a different side of the town. Connections from Ostrava and the cycling routes also provide practical guidance for getting there and planning activities.

Castle and Local History

Zámek Klimkovice is a Renaissance castle dating from the second half of the 16th century. It was rebuilt after fires in 1854 and 1945. Today, it houses the Muzeum Poodří and the town information center. Exhibitions on the second floor present the history and present-day life of Klimkovice, the natural environment of Poodří, and a memorial to the painter Helena Salichová. The history of the town and the natural landscape of Poodří meet here in one place. If the exhibitions are a deciding factor for your visit, please check current visiting arrangements in advance.

The monument to the victims of the First World War also tells a story of local history: erected in 1925, it commemorates 63 residents of Klimkovice who died far from home on the battlefields. The grounds around the monument were last modified in 2018 to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia.

Churches with Distinctive Architecture

The Kostel Nejsvětější Trojice church is the oldest surviving historic building in Klimkovice. Following extensive renovation, it is used for exhibitions, concerts and other social events. Different details catch the eye at Kostel sv. Kateřiny Alexandrijské: the church tower is 64 centimeters off its axis and has had a low roof since the fire of 1854, as the original Renaissance spire was not rebuilt. A Baroque chapel with a dome 25 meters high was built beside the church between 1730 and 1738. Comparing the measured deviation of the tower with the height of the dome makes the different architectural features especially tangible.

Forest Parks, Paths and Cycling Connections

Petra Bezruče Park is a public park with free entry. It is home to the Naučná stezka veverky Augustinky educational trail, with eleven information panels and a children’s trail. A cycling route from Klimkovice towards Polanka and Jistebník also runs along the promenade in the Stromovka avenue. Lesní park Klimkovice has a different focus: this forest recreation area offers ecological play features, information panels and benches. It also has an educational trail and a forest exercise area for rehabilitation for visitors with limited mobility.

The restored Opavská cesta also offers views of the surrounding landscape and is considered an attractive tourist route; it has beautiful views in every season. Its Klimkovice section runs through Hýlov along the edge of the Rakovec forest and includes a lime-tree avenue, probably planted in the second half of the 18th century. Other specific routes include cycle route 6011, which runs through Klimkovice from Polanka nad Odrou towards Olbramice, and route 6199. The latter runs from Vřesina via Mexiko and Vřesinská Street through Klimkovice, joining route 6011 at the intersection with Havlíčkova Street. Check the current route before planning a bike ride.

Spa Tradition and Sanatoria Klimkovice

The treatment complex of Sanatoria Klimkovice is set amid the forests of Nízký Jeseník and offers views of the Beskydy panorama. The modern sanatorium was officially opened in July 1994. Today, the facility is non-governmental and specializes in rehabilitation and spa treatments. The Vodoléčebné centrum has an iodine-bromine brine pool, Finnish and steam saunas with a plunge pool, a whirlpool, a Kneipp path, massage showers and a relaxation room. Alongside cultural attractions and natural landscapes, rehabilitation and spa treatments are therefore another distinct focus in Klimkovice.

Market and Getting There

The traditional Slezský rynek takes place in front of Zámek Klimkovice. The offerings include butcher’s specialties, fresh produce, sweet and savory foods, drinks and refreshments, as well as handicrafts. The Klimkovický jarmark is a recurring town event featuring traditional stalls, food, music and a program for visitors of all ages. Check the specific event dates before your trip. Klimkovice can be reached from Ostrava by public transport on routes 53 and 64; check the timetable before setting off.
