Markvartovice lies in the Hlučínsko between the Opava River and the present-day state border with Poland, in the area between Opava and Ostrava. Protected Baroque architecture, traditional events and local cycling routes offer different ways to explore the village’s history and landscape. When planning your stay, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus more on cultural history, village character or a specific route.
Village character and landscape
Despite its proximity to the regional capital, Ostrava, Markvartovice retains its peaceful village character. Fields and forests surround the village; abundant greenery and a network of paths and cycling routes shape the landscape. Together, these features give the village a rural character, while the nearby regional capital remains part of its regional context. If you would also like to explore the surrounding area, you can make the paths and cycling routes a focus of your plans.
Chapel and local history
Markvartovice was first mentioned in writing in 1377. A later point of reference in the village’s history is the Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity: it is a protected cultural monument and a Baroque chapel dating from around the mid-17th century. It was repaired after a fire in 1945. The dates reveal a history spanning several periods: the village’s first written mention predates the Baroque construction period; the repairs followed the 1945 fire. Thus, the village’s early history and the later history of the chapel stand side by side.
Events and arrival
The Odpust is one of the traditional events held throughout the year. Its timing and programme vary. So if you would like to combine your visit with the festival, check the exact dates in advance. The bus stops in the centre of Markvartovice offer another aspect to consider when planning. Before travelling, check the location of the stop you need so you can take your arrival point into account.
Cycling routes and other activities
The local cycling route descriptions cover different areas. Cycling Route C runs from Štípky through the built-up part of Markvartovice to Černý les. Local Cycling Route A runs north of and above Petřkovice, Ludgeřovice and Markvartovice. The routes offer different points of reference for comparison: for Route C, the starting point, passage through the built-up area and destination are specified; for Route A, its northern position above the three villages defines its location. Check the current signage before setting off.
The Areál opevnění Darkovičky educational trail begins in Markvartovice at the MO-S 16 Rozcestí infantry bunker. The guide to the educational trail, published in 2022, notes that route details may change; check the information before your trip. Another cycling-related attraction is the Pumprtack Marvartovice pump track: it was expanded from a small circuit into a larger pump track area. Check the local conditions before using it. The educational trail and the pump track thus have different specific focuses: a named starting point for one, and the development of a cycling facility for the other activity.
