Šilheřovice brings together parkland, forest, architectural history and golf as distinct themes. The 98-hectare English-style castle park and its several-kilometre circular route offer a focus for outdoor activities; Černý les adds its own forest and nature-conservation theme. Zámek Rotschildů Castle and the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary offer different historical perspectives. You can plan your trip around whether landscape, cultural history or golf is your main interest.

Park and forest: two types of route

A circular route several kilometres long runs around the entire castle park. At this length, you can plan it as a walk in its own right, rather than just a short detour. The English-style park covers 98 hectares and features rare trees and shrubs. The park contains the artificial ponds Podzámecký and U loveckého zámečku, as well as Evelinino jezero. For planning purposes, the area and route length describe two different measures: the size of the park and the circuit around its entire grounds.

Černý les is distinguished by its natural beech stand. The Černý les I and Černý les II nature reserves were established in the forest in 1970. The critically endangered hermit beetle (Osmoderma eremita) is also found in the avenues around the castle park. There are two types of route to compare: a several-kilometre circuit around the entire park and a green-marked hiking route from the castle into Černý les. The first is defined by its length, the second by its markings and forest destination.

Castle, hunting lodge and church

Zámek Rotschildů was built between 1787 and 1815 in the Romantic historicist style. The term refers to Romantic design and the use of historical forms. There is also a hunting lodge in the castle park. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in 1713 by the Jesuit College in Opava. A restored stone tombstone from the late 16th century is set into its exterior wall. In 1764, the church received three bells from the workshop of Opava bell founder František Stanke. The tombstone predates the construction of the church, while the bells were added later; the castle, by contrast, was built between 1787 and 1815.

Golf as another activity

Golf is another specific activity in Šilheřovice. You can play at the publicly accessible golf course without taking the so-called Green Card skills and knowledge tests. The park is home to the 9-hole Rothschild Academy, where complete beginners can also play. These are two separate criteria to consider: the testing requirement at the golf course and the opportunity for beginners to play at the academy. Check the current club rules before visiting, as golf offerings may change.
