Staré Hamry lies within the Beskydy Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Beskydy). The wooden church on Gruň, the stone Church of St. Henry in the village, an educational trail and the Ski Park each offer a different focus. When planning your trip, you can give particular emphasis to local history, the Beskydy landscape or seasonal activities.
Beskydy Landscape and Habitats
Characteristic wooden houses, pastures and small fields have been preserved in the districts of Staré Hamry. They shape the typical Beskydy landscape, making the settlement pattern part of the view. The Podgruň Natural Monument offers a different focus: it is a wet raised-bog meadow on the northwestern slope of the Gruň ridge in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids and protects rare and protected plant species. The village and the bog meadow represent different nature and landscape themes—from settlement patterns to a specific protected habitat.
Churches and History
The wooden Church of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1887, stands on Gruň. Its floor plan is rectangular, while the presbytery, or sanctuary, has a five-sided end. The church has been protected as a cultural monument since 8 October 2002. Pilgrimages are held there around the Feast of Mary, Help of Christians, in May. Church visits can be arranged in advance through the nearby House of St. Joseph. Please arrange your visit before travelling.
The stone Church of St. Henry in Staré Hamry offers a different architectural and historical reference point: its foundation stone was laid on 12 July 1863, and the church was completed two years later. Comparing it with the wooden church on Gruň reveals different building styles and dates. The Gruň–Bílý Kříž educational trail starts at St. Henry’s. It ends at the Three-Country Stone on the border between Moravia, Silesia and Slovakia, and presents the history of Staré Hamry and the construction of the Šance Reservoir. The trail thus connects local history and the history of the reservoir with a destination whose location on the border extends beyond the village itself. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Winter Sports and Travel
The Gruň Ski Park in Staré Hamry has three downhill runs with a combined length of 3.8 km, a two-seater chairlift and two drag lifts. The three runs total 3.8 km, and the lift types complete the picture of the facility. Check operating status before your trip if you plan to visit the park. The pilgrimages held around the feast in May and the Ski Park as a winter attraction offer different seasonal experiences.
Bus services to Staré Hamry run from Frýdlant nad Ostravicí via Ostravice, as well as from Turzovka in Slovakia. Routes and timetables may change, so check your connection before travelling.
