In Rymarov, you can explore cultural history across different periods. Numerous buildings with black roofs define the townscape, including roofs with their original slate covering as well as those with newer materials. Historic buildings, art and archaeological interpretations offer further points of interest. This allows you to shape your stay around the subjects that interest you most, rather than treating all the sights as one single itinerary.
Buildings and Art History
Rýmařov Town Hall was declared a cultural monument in 1966. The rectory is also a cultural monument and is one of the oldest and most valuable buildings in the historic town centre. Kaple V Lipkách is considered a gem of North Moravian Baroque. From 2013, it was opened not only to parishioners and pilgrims, but also to tourists and visitors to the town. Check current access arrangements before planning a visit.
In St. Michael’s Church in Rýmařov, a simple Baroque rosary chapel was built on the left side of the church hall in 1688. The chapel, altar and gallery are among its most original features. The oil painting on the altar depicts the Virgin Mary, St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena. It was created around 1725 by the distinguished Jan Kryštof Handke, who was born in Janovice. The dates mark two points in art history: the construction of the chapel and, about four decades later, the altar painting.
Town History and Archaeology
The Historie Rýmařova exhibition presents finds dating from the town’s founding in the 1270s through to the 15th century. Its time frame thus extends from the town’s early beginnings to the late Middle Ages. Hrádek – Burgstadel is a protected archaeological site that also serves as an outdoor area for the geological exhibition of the Rýmařov Town Museum. It features a replica of the foundations of a residential building in the town castle, with an attached heating installation. The replica illustrates the situation at the end of the 13th century. While the Historie Rýmařova exhibition brings together finds from a long period, the replica at Hrádek illustrates a specific building arrangement.
Exhibitions in Special Locations
The external exhibition of the Rýmařov Town Museum is located in the building of the HEDVA ČESKÝ BROKÁT textile factory. The Marie Kodovská Gallery is housed in the artist’s former home on Mlýnská Street. Her artworks and objects she used herself are on display there. The two locations have different focuses: one is an exhibition in a textile factory building; the other presents art and personal belongings in the artist’s former home. If you are planning to visit the gallery, check current visiting arrangements and opening times.
An Event as a Reason to Travel
The Dřevařské, lesnické a myslivecké dny are held annually at Flemmichova zahrada. The programme includes logging competitions, demonstrations of modern forestry and timber-harvesting equipment, hunting traditions, regional stalls, refreshments and an extensive programme of side events. This makes the event distinct from the buildings, collections and archaeological themes: its focus is on forestry and the timber industry, as well as hunting traditions. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check the specific dates.
