An Empire-style castle, a museum dedicated to local history and marked trails give Jindřichov Ve Slezsku several clear starting points for exploration. The town can be viewed through the lenses of architectural history, religious monuments and landscape. Deciding which of these themes you want to shape your stay is a helpful first step when looking for accommodation.

Jindřichov Castle and its history

Jindřichov Castle was built by the Hodic family of Hodice in the second half of the 17th century. It acquired its present-day Empire-style appearance when it was rebuilt after a fire in 1844. The castle’s construction and its later, fire-related alterations can therefore be viewed as two distinct chapters in its architectural history.

A tour of the castle includes, among other things, the Knights’ Hall, the library, an exhibition of historic toys and the Little Jindřichov Museum. Tour arrangements and access conditions may change; it is best to check the latest visitor information in advance. The museum is on the castle’s first floor. It displays photographs and objects relating to Jindřichov’s pre-war and post-war history, the castle and brewery, and the daily lives of local residents.

Jindřichov Castle Park is open to the public from May to September. The park is home to a listed castle summerhouse dating from the first half of the 19th century. If you plan to visit both the castle and the park, take the park’s seasonal opening dates into account.

Churches, chapels and historic buildings

The present-day Church of St. Nicholas is documented in archival sources in 1672 and was designed on the model of a Roman basilica. It has three naves and a prismatic tower. A wall adorned with Baroque statues of St. John of Nepomuk and St. Florian surrounds the church. The architecture and figures offer different ways to appreciate the ensemble.

The village of Arnultovice is also home to several protected historic buildings: a recently restored brick Marian chapel, a rural house dating from the 18th century and a detached, timber-clad barn from the 19th century. Both the house and the barn are listed. The Swedish Chapel lies north of Jindřichov, on pastureland near the Polish border. It is an example of high-quality folk architecture from the last quarter of the 19th century.

The history of brewing here dates back to 1589, when a brewery was built in Jindřichov, one of the very first in Moravia. Near the main entrance to the castle grounds, on the main street, stands a monumental Baroque Marian column with additional figures of saints, dating from 1757. The Marian ensemble is considered artistically significant and is listed.

Valley views, walks and cycling routes

Jindřichov lies in a valley framed to the northwest by the 466-metre-high Rochova hora and Karlova hora, and to the east by the 704-metre-high Pěnkavčí hora. These heights offer beautiful views of the valley. The elevation information distinguishes between the two sides of the valley: an elevation is given for both Rochova hora and Pěnkavčí hora, while Karlova hora is another prominent landmark to the northwest.

The U Studánky rest area is a popular destination for walks at any time of year, for both local residents and visitors to the municipality. A blue-marked hiking trail leads from Svinný potok via the waypoints Svinný potok, hájovna and Svinný potok, rozc. to the bridge in Jindřichov. Green-marked hiking route no. 4810 runs from U obrázku via Svinný potok, hájovna to the Kraví hora junction. Check the current trail markings on site.

The Jindřichov–Prudnik cycling route starts at the local castle and passes the old Jindřichov brewery, Pivovar, on its way to the border. The cross-border Prudnik–Jindřichov cycling route is signposted and has rest areas and tourist information boards. For train travel, Jindřichov ve Slezsku railway station is another useful reference point: it is on the single-track line no. 292 from Krnov to Šumperk.
