In Tuhaň, local history and cycling offer two distinct ways to explore: the Church of St. Gallus brings together several historical dates and a specific artistic motif, while the northern Kokořínsko cycling route passes through the village. When planning, you can first decide whether to focus on church and architectural history or on a cycling tour. The historical story is marked not by a single date, but by a sequence of references, changes and monuments.
The Church of St. Gallus and Local History
The first recorded mention of the church in Tuhaň dates from 1362. In 1711, the old church was replaced by the Baroque Church of St. Gallus under the patronage of Franz Ernst von Waldstein. Most of the church’s furnishings also date from 1711. The dates represent different milestones: 1362 marks the early mention of the church, while 1711 marks the replacement of the older building and the date of most of its furnishings. This makes it possible to trace the sequence from the first record to the Baroque design.
A sculptural group of the Mount of Olives stands by the church. It comprises a statue of the Saviour, a statue of an angel and three sleeping apostles. This specific arrangement of figures brings the religious subject to life: alongside the Saviour, the group includes an angel and apostles. For a cultural-historical look at St. Gallus, this work complements the building’s history with a clearly identified artistic motif.
In 1833, a new bell tower beside the church replaced the older bell tower in the centre of Tuhaň; the cemetery was also moved outside the village. A statue of St. Florian was erected in Tuhaň’s village square in 1736. The historical landmarks therefore extend beyond the church building: the former site of the tower, the relocation of the cemetery and the monument in the village square are also part of local history.
Folk Architecture in the Area
The architectural story also extends beyond a single building. The area around Tuhaň and the neighbouring municipalities is designated as a region of folk architecture. There, log houses built by the original Slavic population stand alongside half-timbered buildings constructed by the later German population. This combination gives the cultural-historical theme a regional dimension: alongside the specific dates relating to St. Gallus and the monuments, you can consider the architectural styles as part of a wider, intermunicipal context. The history of a single church building and a broader view of the area’s architecture thus sit side by side.
The Northern Kokořínsko Cycling Route
The northern Kokořínsko cycling route passes through Domašice, Obrok, Tuhanec, Tuhaň and Pavličky. It is 28 km long, of moderate difficulty and suitable for cross-country and trekking bikes. When choosing a cycling tour, you have three specific points of reference: route length, difficulty level and suitable bike types. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out. Unlike Tuhaň’s historically focused attractions, the cycling route offers a distinct activity. You can plan your stay according to whether church and architectural history or cycling should take centre stage.
