Architecture with distinctive forms

Okrouhlá U Nového Boru offers different perspectives on architectural and landscape history. The Sample Room and the Baroque Chapel of Panny Marie Sněžné present specific architectural themes, while the Geopark draws attention to the local rocks. For those looking to get moving, there is also a 44-kilometre cycle route that runs through the cadastral area. When planning, you can choose between architectural forms, geology and a longer ride.

The Sample Room is 18.6 metres high and is attached, in the lower part of Okrouhlá, to a former factory that made painted church windows. Stone buttresses, tall pointed-arch windows and a low roof reminiscent of a chapel define its exterior. The height, windows and roof shape are distinct features: together, they show why the building can be described not only by its size but also by its silhouette. The workshop and sample room for cathedral windows in Okrouhlá also dates from 1893.

The Chapel of Panny Marie Sněžné

The Baroque chapel was built in 1733 to replace an older wooden chapel. Its plinth is made of sandstone blocks, and its central ground plan follows the pattern of a five-pointed star. Its roof consists of a dome, a cylindrical lantern, five windows and a conical roof. The ground plan and roof offer different ways of looking at the building: one through its star-shaped layout, the other through the design of its roof. Visitors interested in religious architecture will find specific forms here that go beyond the date and style designation.

Geopark and cycle route

The Okrouhlá Geopark is a small, circular educational trail right in the village. Its information boards explain the local rocks and show visitors where they can find them in their original setting around Okrouhlá. The boards also offer tips for further excursions in the area. The trail thus answers two specific questions: Which rocks characterize the village, and where can they be found in their original setting nearby?

A report from 2023 says the Geopark is freely accessible year-round. Before your visit, check whether this access information is still valid.

For cycling, Route No. 3054 – Nová Huť–Provodín, game preserve – is another option. It runs through the cadastral area of Okrouhlá, is 44 km long and is suitable for all types of bicycles. Compared with the small educational trail right in the village, it offers a different scale for planning: here, a longer cycling route is the focus, while the trail is a circular path with geological information boards.

The landscape in a broader context

The landscape connections also extend beyond individual buildings. The České středohoří and Lužické hory protected landscape areas meet the Ralská pahorkatina in the cadastral area of Okrouhlá. This setting adds another perspective to the view of architecture and rocks: it describes the meeting of different landscape regions within the broader context of the cadastral area.
