Okna brings together local history and trails whose starting points and directions are easy to distinguish. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and its protected complex add a cultural highlight; hiking trails lead to the railway station, towards Bezděz and towards Žďárský les. There is also a cycling route connected with Kokořínsko and a shorter loop via Okna and Houska. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Okna, these themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.

Church, Heritage Protection and Local History

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a protected heritage site. The ensemble includes the church itself, the former cemetery and the surrounding wall with three gates. It also includes the main and side staircases, sculptures of Saint Peter, Saint Paul and the Assumption of Mary, as well as a gravestone. The protection therefore covers an ensemble comprising the church and other features of its surroundings.

A large bell dating from 1594 hangs in Okna’s church tower. Masopust celebrations were also held in Okna in several past years: from 2010 to 2017, and in 2019 and 2020. The bell and the listed years of celebrations provide specific chronological reference points in the history of the village.

Hiking Trails in Different Directions

The railway station is a useful reference point when choosing a trail. The green hiking trail runs through the built-up part of Okna to the station and continues towards Bezděz. The yellow hiking trail starts at the station and heads towards Žďárský les. At the U Maršů signpost, it joins the Březínské studánky nature trail.

The two trail descriptions differ in their routes and directions: the green trail passes through the built-up part of Okna and continues towards Bezděz. The yellow trail starts at the railway station and has further reference points at Žďárský les and the trail near U Maršů. This makes it possible to choose between the trails based on their stated destinations rather than treating them as interchangeable routes.

Cycling and Landscape

There is a cycling route in Okna that tourists use on their way to Kokořínsko. Another option is a shorter cycling loop called “Na kole Máchovi v patách po stopách zaniklých hradů” (“Cycling in Mácha’s footsteps, following the trail of vanished castles”). It passes through Okna and Houska and is about 25 km long; the loop starts in Doksy and returns to Doksy. The distance therefore refers to the entire loop from and back to Doksy, not to a section starting in Okna.

The landscape is shaped by a broad lowland whose lowest point is at 280.80 m above sea level. To the east, it is bordered by a panorama of Bezděz Castle. South of Okna, the Okenský potok feeds a pond system near Doksy. The elevation, the eastern panorama and the stream to the south offer different points of reference for the landscape around Okna.
