Slunečná brings together nature watching, local history and glass art. Farská louka lies beside the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the centre of Slunečná and in the eastern part of the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. A moderately challenging hiking route passes through the village; the Hoineff Glass Art workshop offers a glimpse into how glass sculptures are made. This gives you several ways to experience Slunečná: seasonal nature, the history of a church building, artistic glasswork or a 14-kilometre hike.

Nature at Farská louka

Every year, after the snow melts, the naturalised white-flowered crocus blooms at Farská louka. If you want to make the blossom the focus of your visit, the period after the snow melts is the relevant seasonal reference. The meadow is also home to large, stable populations of the common toad, common frog and slow worm. For seasonal planning, the blossom is the clear reference point; the populations, by contrast, reflect the meadow’s enduring value as a habitat.

Church and local history

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built between 1846 and 1850 using a bequest from glass merchant Johann Georg Jirschik. Its consecration on 15 August 1850 fell in the final year of construction; the building and its consecration are therefore two distinct historical milestones. The parish house, administered by the Order of Malta, was built beside the church in 1880. Around three decades separate the consecration from the construction of the parish house, which marks a later, distinct chapter in the village’s history. The glass merchant who endowed the church and the Hoineff Glass Art workshop illustrate two different connections between Slunečná and glass: one historical and one artistic.

Glass art at Hoineff Glass Art

The Hoineff Glass Art workshop in Slunečná focuses primarily on original glass art created using unique and technically demanding methods. During a visit, guests can watch the fusing technique up close and discover how glass sculptures are made. A 2021 article also describes coffee roasted on site for visitors and how Hoineff tells them his story. If you want to plan this specific kind of visit, check the current details in advance.

Hiking through Slunečná

The Výroční stezka, Stage II: Češka–Slunečná–Žandov, is a 14-kilometre, moderately challenging hiking route that passes through Slunečná. Its length and difficulty rating give hikers a concrete basis for planning. Unlike the seasonal blossom or a glimpse of glass art, this route centres on the distance and its moderate difficulty. As route details may change when trail markings are updated, check the current route before setting out.
