Dubá lies on the edge of the Kokořínsko–Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area; forests and gorges among sandstone cliffs characterise the surroundings. At the same time, the hop-drying facility, Baroque memorials and ecclesiastical architecture tell different chapters of the town’s history. When planning your trip, there is a practical choice to make: should you focus mainly on the historic sites, or would you also like to include routes through the landscape?

Landscape and excursions

The protected landscape area brings together forests, meadows and pastures, rare animal and plant species, and cultural monuments; its distinctive landscape character shapes the wider surroundings. If you would like to experience nature as well as the architecture, you can include the protected area as a separate part of your plans.

Masarykovo náměstí in Dubá is a starting point for excursions. The Hradská Trail begins in Dubá and passes the Čap rock outcrop, then continues via Zámecký vrch and Dřevčice to Chudý hrádek and on to the Holanské rybníky basin. The Prokopská spojka takes a different route: it connects the Mlýnská Trail to Dubá via a well-known statue and the Sušárna chmele hop-drying facility. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Architectural heritage and industrial history

The Sušárna chmele is a technical monument of national significance. At the peak of hop cultivation, Dubá had six hop dryers; the Sušárna is the only one preserved in its original condition. After the floors have been renovated, it could be safely used by visitors. Check whether the building is currently open to visitors before your visit.

The Kostel Nalezení svatého Kříže (Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross) is a protected architectural monument dating from the 18th century. Construction lasted from 1744 to 1760. Its unified Rococo furnishings date from around 1755 and come from the workshops of František Adámek and Jan Chládek. The Rococo furnishings from around 1755 fall within the construction period of 1744 to 1760. This gives a more precise timeframe for the church than the general reference to the 18th century.

The Baroque Sloup Nejsvětější Trojice (Column of the Holy Trinity) stands in the square. It was erected in 1726 in remembrance of a plague epidemic and a town fire, and features a sculptural group of the Holy Trinity and the Virgin Mary. The monument thus combines religious imagery with two events in the town’s history.

The Skalní sklípky, cellars carved into the rock, are an integral part of Dubá’s historic built environment. They document the creative use of natural conditions. An English-style park with numerous valuable trees and a swimming pool adjoins Nový Berštejn Castle.
