Újezd brings together a Baroque village chapel, the medieval Hradištěk fortress, and archaeological traces in the valley of the Švábský potok stream and on the plateaus above it. Those wishing to appreciate culture on different scales can view architectural forms and traces of human activity as different ways of understanding the place. The contrast between individual buildings and the forms of the landscape gives a stay a distinct cultural focus.

The Chapel and Hradištěk: Two Historical Scales

The Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Újezd, now part of the municipality of Jestřebí, was built in 1730 as a rural Baroque chapel. Its circular central plan arranges the building around its centre and sets it apart from a long, narrow church interior. A volute gable defines the façade; a roof lantern with a bell, dome, and cross rises above the roof. Two features help place the architecture in context: the central layout and the details of the façade and roof. The date 1730 places the chapel in the early 18th century.

On the eastern edge of Újezd, next to the classicist Church of St. Nicholas, lies the excursion destination of Hradištěk. It preserves the remains of a medieval fortress from the 14th century. The visible remains include a prominent mound marking the castle core, as well as large sections of the surrounding moat and ramparts. The mound marks the castle core, while the moat and ramparts reveal the enclosing nature of the site. At Hradištěk, traces of fortifications in the terrain thus sit alongside the clearly described architectural form of the chapel.

Archaeological Traces in the Valley

The archaeological site “středov. sídelní jednotky Chvistec, Popelov, lomy” covers the cadastral area of Újezd u Jestřebí and lies in the valley of the Švábský potok stream and on the plateaus above it. There are historic sandstone quarries in the valley. Several caves and overhangs in the side ravines bear traces of human activity; historic rock carvings can also be found there. The different traces can be distinguished: the quarries reflect the working of sandstone, while human interventions can be seen in the caves and overhangs. The rock carvings form another kind of historical trace. This broadens the view from the buildings to a landscape with several forms of human legacy.

Cycling Route and Choosing Accommodation

For broader trip planning, a cycling route in the municipality of Jestřebí is a separate regional option. A route described in January 2024 runs from the railway station towards Sluneční Dvůr and ends at Zákupy Castle. Check the route details before setting out.

If you choose Újezd for a cultural stay, tailor your search for a holiday apartment to your main focus: the chapel and Hradištěk, or the archaeological landscape. Compare the location of a specific offer with your travel plans; if interested, you can consider the cycling route in the municipality of Jestřebí as a separate part of broader regional planning.
