Blíževedly brings together traces of several centuries with hiking routes around Vlhošť. Visitors planning a stay can choose from different interests: the town’s architectural history, nearby ruins or the landscape along documented hiking routes. The contrast between a Baroque church, older architectural features and houses from later centuries gives your exploration a historical context. For planning purposes, it is worth treating sightseeing in the town, visits to ruins and hikes as separate interests, and arranging your journey separately.

A town with a clear historical milestone

Blíževedly was granted town status in 1290; that year is also the first surviving historical mention of the town. Both facts belong together: the town’s history can be tied to a specific year without treating the granting of town status and the historical mention as two separate periods. The town also has traces from considerably later periods. So you can explore its history not only through a date, but also through buildings from different centuries.

Church, column and historic houses

The Baroque Church of St. Wenceslas brings together different periods: its rib vault comes from an original 14th-century chapel. The contrast between the Baroque church and the older vault offers a tangible point of reference if you want to look at architecture beyond its classification by style. There is also a dated example in the square: the Baroque Holy Trinity Column stands in its southern part and dates from 1714. Its construction date can be compared with that of the considerably older vault without assigning both structures to the same period.

Blíževedly also has surviving log and half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. They complement the church and column with examples of domestic architecture from later centuries. This chronology can serve as a thread for your exploration: from the vault of the original chapel, to the column from 1714, to the surviving houses. In this way, historic forms of housing can be viewed alongside religious and public buildings.

Ruins in the surrounding area

If you want to look beyond the town’s architectural history, there are two sites with ruins nearby, each with different remains still standing. Hřídelník once served, among other things, as a prison. A perimeter wall and palace walls survive there; an impressive underground passage leads to the palace walls. Check current access arrangements before visiting. The ruins at Ronov offer a different architectural point of reference: remains of cellars survive there. The two sites can therefore be distinguished by what remains: at Hřídelník, sections of walls and the site’s former use; at Ronov, cellar remains.

Hiking routes around Vlhošť

There is also a connection to Vlhošť for hiking enthusiasts. A hiking route over the mountain passed through a habitat of flower-rich beech forests; a hike over Vlhošť continued as far as Blíževedly. These routes are documented for 2024. If you want to explore the area on foot today, check the current paths in advance. Unlike the ruins, the focus here is on the hiking route and the forest habitat. This offers another way to discover Blíževedly, distinct from an exploration focused on buildings and historical remains.

Getting there by train

Blíževedly railway station is on line 087 between Litoměřice horní nádraží and Česká Lípa. Check the timetables before setting out. This lets you plan your journey separately from your choice of sightseeing interests, whether you are interested in the town’s buildings, nearby ruins or documented hiking routes.
