The nearly three-hundred-year tradition of uninterrupted crystal chandelier production gives Kamenický Šenov a clear cultural focus. There are also historic buildings, a striking basalt formation and trails of varying lengths and themes. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus mainly on the history of glassmaking, short routes through the town or longer trails.

The history of glassmaking—with an important visitor access note

The permanent exhibition at the Sklářské muzeum Kamenický Šenov traces the development of engraved and cut glass from the 17th century to the present day. It is currently inaccessible because part of the museum is being renovated. Check again before your trip to see whether access has resumed.

The permanent exhibition includes historicist crystal chandeliers with pendants and layered lighting fixtures. The tradition of making this type of lighting in the region dates back to 1724. Together with the nearly three-hundred-year tradition of uninterrupted chandelier production in Kamenický Šenov, this makes glass production a central theme for a culture-focused stay. Note the distinction between the regional date of 1724 and the description of the town’s tradition: these are two separate details.

The history of glassmaking is also woven into the townscape beyond the museum. The 2.5-kilometre Sklářská stezka leads to significant places and monuments in Kamenický Šenov connected with the history of glassmaking. Its length makes it a compact way to explore these historical connections along a route; it is not designated as a circular route.

The church and cemetery as historical landmarks

The Baroque Narození sv. Jana Křtitele Church, the Church of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, dates from 1718. The restored Old Cemetery in Kamenický Šenov has Rococo and Neoclassical tombstones dating from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. This places two distinct historical periods side by side: the early 18th-century church and the later tombstones. This contrast in dates adds other examples of local cultural heritage to the story of glassmaking.

Choose trails by distance and theme

For a route focused more closely on the glassmaking tradition, there is the two-kilometre Sklářská stezka. The nearly 17-kilometre Cyklostezka Varhany is on a different scale. It is separated from motor traffic and intended for pedestrians and cyclists. It follows the former railway line from Česká Lípa to Kamenický Šenov. The distances listed help distinguish between a short themed route and a considerably longer trail; they do not, in themselves, indicate walking or cycling times.

There are also several ways to explore the area’s railway history. A 4.5-kilometre heritage railway dating from 1886 runs beneath Zámecký vrch to the glassmaking town of Kamenický Šenov. After essential repairs, seasonal museum service began, using historic steam and motor trains. Check before your trip whether and when trains are running.

The “Po stopách železnice” circular route begins and ends at the car park by Panská skála. One possible option is to take a historic train through the countryside to Česká Kamenice and back. Check in advance whether this ride is available on your travel dates. This lets you plan the circular route separately from the availability of a train ride.

Panská skála and practical information

Panská skála is a geological formation created by volcanic activity and a typical example of columnar basalt jointing. There is also an information centre, a car park and a place to get refreshments at Panská skála. The car park is also the starting and finishing point for the “Po stopách železnice” circular route—a useful landmark if you include this trail in your plans.

This gives you a clear range of options: glassmaking history and historic buildings shape the cultural perspective on the town, while the two-kilometre Sklářská stezka and the longer Cyklostezka Varhany differ considerably in distance and focus. Panská skála adds a geological theme to the options. Check train schedules and the museum’s current access arrangements before finalising your trip.
