Žandov lies in the Ploučnice Valley. Historic details of the town include the stone town fountain, the sandstone column of Saint Sebastian and the Koruna House. For travel planning, a longer hiking stage and a shorter nature trail in the nearby area are also the focus, offering routes of different lengths.

Cultural History at the Fountain, Column and Koruna House

The stone town fountain bears the town coat of arms and the year 1853. It is a national cultural monument and replaced an earlier wooden fountain that same year. The fountain was restored in 1997. The sequence makes the change tangible: the wooden fountain was replaced by the stone one in 1853, and the latter was restored later.

A different date appears on the sandstone column of Saint Sebastian. It is about six metres high, not counting the statue, which was temporarily kept in the church. The column bears a German inscription in capital letters dated 1717. This year is significantly earlier than the date on the fountain, adding a distinct chronological note to the town’s history.

Koruna House also preserves a clue to earlier routes and changing names. Its main corridor once served as a passage to the courtyard where horses were changed. After 1918, the inn in Koruna House was renamed from “U císaře rakouského” to “U Koruny”. Alongside the stone monument, a historic transport-related use and a change of name thus represent distinct aspects of the town’s history.

Landscape and Routes Around Žandov

The České středohoří Protected Landscape Area is part of the natural setting: the territory of Žandov includes its Zones I to IV. Nearby, the Okolím Karlovských rybníků za poznáním nature trail uses its information panels to cover the history of the area and the lives of local aquatic and forest animals and plants. The landscape and its history are therefore additional travel-planning themes alongside the town’s built heritage.

A Hiking Stage or a Short Nature Trail Loop

Stage II of the Výroční stezka Češka – Slunečná – Žandov is a 14-kilometre hiking route of moderate difficulty. It reaches Žandov via a blue-marked hiking trail through Radeč and along Dvorský kopec. The stage is also described as connecting to the paved cycle path No. 15, “Ploučnice, Varhany”: 1.5 kilometres after Volfartice, it joins this cycle path.

A shorter option for comparison is the nearby nature trail. It is an easy, marked circular route of two kilometres with seven stops; allow about an hour to visit it. The information panels combine nature topics with the history of the area, giving the loop a different focus from the longer hiking stage. The route lengths and difficulty ratings help you choose between the two according to how much walking you want to do. Winter maintenance of the nature trail is not guaranteed.
