The Church of the Transfiguration, a protected marl slope and several routes offer different experiences in Slatina Nad Zdobnicí. When deciding whether to visit, it is worth considering the options according to the type of trip: the church and gallery are cultural attractions, cycling routes are for route planning, and reaching the geological site requires crossing trackless terrain. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether culture, cycling or nature will be your main focus.
Baroque Church and Local History
The Church of the Transfiguration was consecrated in 1699. This spacious Baroque stone-and-brick building was built by František Adam z Bubna. The church houses a richly carved Baroque wooden altar dating from around 1701; the carver is unknown. The consecration year, 1699, and the altar's approximate date mark different milestones: one provides a reference point for the building's history, the other for its furnishings.
The large church bell, cast in 1523, is considered Slatina Nad Zdobnicí's oldest monument. Its date is considerably earlier than the consecration of the Baroque church, adding an older reference point to the story of the village. The church is also one of the municipality's notable visitor attractions.
Nature Reserve and Geological Site
The Ve Slatinské stráni Nature Reserve protects marl slopes with warmth-loving flora, including the lady's-slipper orchid. Another natural attraction is the Slatina nad Zdobnicí–Vápenka geological site: it lies west of the municipality, above the Zdobnice River, on a wooded slope. There are several springs and travertine deposits there. The two places therefore represent different aspects of nature: the reserve is known for the flora of its marl slopes, while the geological site features a slope, springs and travertine.
If you plan to visit the geological site specifically, take its access conditions into account. The approach crosses trackless terrain, and the site is more than 250 metres from the road. Include both factors in your plans rather than treating it as a stop right by the road.
Cycling Route, Alternative Route and Railway
Cycling route 4075 runs from Vamberk through Slatina Nad Zdobnicí to Říčky in the Orlické Mountains. The 34.4-kilometre route is considered moderately difficult and is suitable for trekking bikes. Another option is “Po stopách českých krajinářů” (“In the footsteps of Czech landscape painters”): it runs from Slatina Nad Zdobnicí railway station via Rybná nad Zdobnicí, the area above the Rybná stop, Javornice, Zadní Ochoz, Nebeská Rybná and the bridge at Hamernice, before returning to the station. It is 28.5 kilometres long.
The route details answer different planning questions: for route 4075, the type of bike and difficulty level are specified; “Po stopách českých krajinářů” provides a specific sequence of places and the return to the starting point. Local trail conditions can change, so check the route before setting off.
The railway line from Rokytnice v Orlických horách to Doudleby nad Orlicí runs through Slatina Nad Zdobnicí, connecting there with the Prague–Letohrad line. For a specific trip, check the timetable for your travel date.
Gallery and Historic Routes
The local gallery displays paintings by many well-known artists who also worked in the region. The picture gallery of the cultural club of the local agricultural cooperative was founded with the support of Professor Holý and teacher Alois Krčmář. Professor Holý lent works for the gallery or helped acquire them; these included works by leading visual artists from the second half of the 19th century and the 20th century.
The village's history of travel routes also goes back a long way: a historic route known in the Middle Ages as the King's Road ran through Slatina Nad Zdobnicí. It passed through the Zdobnice valley, then the Slatinský potok stream valley and the Suchá forest, continuing through Kunvald to Silesia. During railway construction, Bronze Age objects were found along this historic route in Slatina Nad Zdobnicí. Gold and silver coins from the 13th and 14th centuries were also discovered along the route.
