Skuhrov Nad Bělou is a natural gateway to the Orlické Mountains. There are several ways to explore the area: the Vápenka Skuhrov nature trail leads from the centre along a forest path to Skuhrov Castle, while the Rybářská Czech-Finnish nature trail features information boards about local flora and fauna. Other highlights include a church with a Baroque altar, historic buildings and traces of local iron production. When planning your trip, there is a clear choice to make: should the route to the castle be the main focus of your outing, or would you prefer to focus more on architectural and industrial history?
Hiking Trails with Different Themes
The Vápenka Skuhrov nature trail combines a clear route with a historical theme. It starts in the centre of Skuhrov Nad Bělou, follows a forest path to Skuhrov Castle and is named after a local water reservoir dating from the early 20th century. Information boards along the trail cover the history of the Vápenka. If you like learning about local history as you walk, this route offers both the path to the castle and these themed stops.
The Rybářská Czech-Finnish nature trail is about 1.5 kilometres long, with information boards along the route devoted to local flora and fauna. The two trails therefore offer different focuses: Vápenka leads to the castle and explores the history of the Vápenka, while the Rybářská route focuses on nature. If you prefer a nature-themed walk, you can factor its approximate length into your day’s plans; if you are looking for a specific historical destination, follow the route to the castle.
Skuhrov Castle Ruins as a Hiking Destination
The Skuhrov Castle ruins include an 11-metre-high observation tower, and there is also an open-air amphitheatre on the grounds. The castle ruins and observation tower are freely accessible year-round. Nevertheless, check access conditions before planning a specific visit. Free parking is available at the castle ruins. The tower and amphitheatre offer different places to visit as part of a trip to the castle, while the parking is available for visitors arriving at the site.
Architectural History and Local Culture
The Church of St James the Greater was built between 1715 and 1718; its Baroque altar dates from the 18th century. The historic Panský dům dates from 1806. Skuhrov Nad Bělou is also home to a statue of St Wenceslas from the first half of the 19th century. A culturally focused stay therefore offers several points of interest: sacred architecture, a historic building and a local monument.
Iron Production and Practical Information
The local company Porkert was converted into a cast-iron foundry and later modernised. The iron production exhibition displays a collection of products made by J. Porkert of Skuhrov Nad Bělou. It is located in the Skuhrov municipal office building and can be visited on the working days of the municipal office and tourist information centre. Check in advance which visiting time suits your plans.
The tourist information centre provides information about transport connections, as well as tips for trips and walks. Proměny dřeva adds another cultural highlight: an annual chainsaw woodcarving symposium held in the first days of July. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the event dates before making your plans.
