Bílý Újezd offers several specific points of interest for a culture- and leisure-focused stay: its history spans from the church’s predecessor, documented as far back as 1360, to the statue on the village green, dating from 1870. A public multi-purpose sports facility in the centre and the named Ještětice–Bílý Újezd–Podbřezí cycling route add to the historical attractions. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether architectural history or sporting and cycling interests are more important to you.
Church and Bell Tower
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord is a Gothic religious building dating from the 16th century. A predecessor building is documented as far back as 1360. The Baroque main altar dates from 1748; key elements were created by the sculptor František Pacák, and it depicts the Transfiguration of the Lord on Mount Tabor. The predecessor building documented in 1360, the Gothic church building and the main altar from 1748 thus represent different periods.
A late Gothic bell tower dating from the 16th century stands by the church, built into the cemetery wall. Its three-tier shingle roof is a distinctive architectural feature. The tower also contains a surviving bell that was cast in 1557 and renovated in 1564. The bell tower brings together its architectural form and the history of a specific furnishing.
Architectural History and Places of Remembrance
Originally built of wood, the Zájezdní hostinec was rebuilt in stone towards the end of the 16th century, with walls about one metre thick and massive vaulted ceilings. In the second half of the 19th century, the attic housed a dance hall; the first theatre performances by local amateur actors were also held there. The history of the building thus links its architectural development with its later cultural use.
Mančinka’s grave in the cemetery in Bílý Újezd is marked by a slender obelisk made of white Carrara marble. Mančinka is also associated with Božena Němcová’s novel Babička. The gravestone and its literary association offer different ways to explore local history. A statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, dating from 1870, also stands on the village green in Bílý Újezd, known as “Hlavatka”.
Sports, Cycling and Landscape
There are two named locations for sports: a public multi-purpose sports facility is available in the centre of Bílý Újezd, while a football pitch lies at the southern edge of the village, below the ZEAS Podorlicko site. Bílý Újezd also lies on the named Ještětice–Bílý Újezd–Podbřezí cycling route. If you include the route in your tour plans, check its current course in advance to plan your stages.
Hroška in the Municipality
Hroška is also part of the municipality. The village lies in a valley through which the Ještětický potok flows from east to west; a chapel dedicated to Saint Wenceslas, built in 1887, is also located there. Hroška adds a specific landscape feature and a dated religious building to the picture of the municipality.
