Střezetice offers two distinct points of interest for a stay: memorial sites commemorating the 1866 Battle of Hradec Králové and cycle route 4286, which passes through the village. When planning, it is worth considering the monuments and routes separately. The memorial sites have different locations; the cycle route passes through Střezetice, while a yellow-marked hiking trail starts at Dlouhé Dvory railway station. This lets you decide whether to focus your time on the memorial sites or on a route.
Memories of the 1866 battle
The “Pomník jezdecké srážky u Střezetic” commemorates soldiers and horses killed in a skirmish on 3 July 1866 as part of the Battle of Hradec Králové. The monument is near Střezetice on the historic battlefield. It was unveiled on 2 July 2016 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Hradec Králové. The two dates refer to different events: 3 July 1866 marks the skirmish, while 2 July 2016 marks the later unveiling. This distinction in time helps put the historical events and their commemoration into context.
Another memorial site is the monument to Baron Alexandr von Bethmann. The sandstone pyramid bears an inscribed plaque in Czech and German. It stands about 300 metres east of Střezetice, in a group of four monuments in an open field. Its current location also has a history: in 1894, the monument was moved there from a field. Its form, bilingual inscription and relocation offer different points of reference when exploring the memory of the battle.
Graves and individual life stories
The “Hroby Obětí války 1866” monument is a sandstone pyramid marking the grave of 30 Austrian and Prussian soldiers. They fell on 3 July 1866; the grave is located southeast of Dlouhé Dvory. Its location therefore differs from that of the monument near Střezetice and provides another place name to look for on the map.
The grave monument commemorates Austrian First Lieutenant Edmund von Salemfels, who belonged to the 9th Uhlan Regiment. A polished granite pillar with a bronze coat of arms stands in front of a matching gravestone. Here, the commemoration of a named individual is combined with a clearly described design for the grave monument.
The monument to Romuald von Dobrucki has also been relocated. It was moved from a field between Horní Dohalice and Dlouhé Dvory, beside the railway line, to its current location. Along with the Bethmann monument, relocated in 1894, this history draws attention to the fact that a memorial site is not always in its original location. The two details concern different monuments and different former locations.
Cycle route, hiking trail and railway connection
For a cycling trip, cycle route 4286 passes through Střezetice towards Všestary. Along the way, you can stop at the “Pomník padlých koní” monument. This gives the route a specific connection to the village and its commemorative culture, without requiring you to treat it as the same location as the other monuments mentioned.
Another option is the yellow-marked hiking trail: from Dlouhé Dvory railway station, hikers can go to Rozběřice and continue to Chlum, the centre of the 1866 battlefield. Střezetice and Dlouhé Dvory are also part of an educational trail. Dlouhé Dvory station serves as the railway connection for Střezetice; both places are administered by the same municipal office. The cycle route and hiking trail therefore differ both in their course and in their starting point. As local markings may change, check the route before setting out.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Střezetice, the monuments and routes can provide a thematic focus for your stay. If you are mainly interested in the memorial sites, the different forms, inscriptions and local histories take centre stage. If you would rather plan a route, the cycle route through Střezetice and the hiking trail starting at Dlouhé Dvory are two distinct options. Choose the focus that suits your travel plans.
