Discover Lovčice through specific features of its local history: the Church of Saint Bartholomew, sculptures on Velká náves and places of remembrance. Nature and geology are also part of the picture, including protected dry grasslands, wetlands, bird populations and fossil-bearing Cretaceous rocks. The Lovčice obec stop is another point of reference for planning your journey. Culture, nature conservation and geology offer different perspectives on the named places and areas.

Church, Sculptures and Local History

The Church of Saint Bartholomew is located in Lovčice u Nového Bydžova. Two sculptures stand in the centre of Velká náves: “Jesus on the Cross” and “Statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus.” A statue of the Virgin Mary is also set into the base of the crucifixion sculpture. The two works present different religious motifs in the same central location.

Places of historical remembrance are also among the specific themes of local history. The grave of Soviet Red Army soldier Akan Julimetou is in the local cemetery. He was born in 1910 and fell in battle on 22 May 1945. A fortress once stood on the hill of Na Pekelci. A bell chamber or bell tower and an enclosing wall are also located in Lovčice u Nového Bydžova. These historical traces extend from the former fortress on Na Pekelci to the grave of Akan Julimetou, who fell in 1945.

Nature Conservation and Birdlife

The Žehuňsko Natura 2000 site covers 8.1196 hectares in the cadastral area of Lovčice u Nového Bydžova. Its protected habitats include semi-natural dry grasslands and scrubland on calcareous substrates (Festuco-Brometalia, habitat type 6210) as well as alkaline fens (habitat type 7230). The stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) is also a protected species. The nature theme therefore encompasses both different habitat types and a specifically named beetle species.

The Žehuňský rybník – Obora Kněžičky bird area protects populations of the little bittern (Ixobrychus minutus) and the spotted crake (Porzana porzana), as well as their habitats. From 1996 to 2002, it was an important breeding area for 131 bird species.

Geology in Kněžičky

The Kněžičky site is a geotourism attraction featuring fossil-bearing Cretaceous rocks and so-called white slopes. Its geological features differ from the habitats and bird species of the protected areas: the focus here is on rocks, fossils and the distinctive slopes. Kněžičky is accessible by car without access restrictions; it is possible to drive to within 250 metres.
