The Obědovice fortified settlement offers a tangible connection to the history of the place: its approximate dimensions, the surrounding water area and the named monuments on the upper area provide a clearly defined historical focal point. Other themes add to this perspective: a former marshland fortress, the local theater group, recreational use of former sand extraction sites and a cycle route through the village. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Obědovice, this distinction can help you choose the focus you want for your stay.
Obědovice fortified settlement: waterside setting and archaeological history
Listed as a significant archaeological site in category ÚAN I, the fortified settlement is dated from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. Its register classification was updated on June 9, 2023. The site is approximately oval and measures 23 × 19 meters; it is surrounded by a water area measuring about 106 × 75 meters. Its upper area lies around four meters above the water level. Its shape, dimensions and waterside setting provide several concrete features that help describe the site.
Three distinct memorial features stand on the upper area: a Neoclassical statue of Saint Lawrence (Svatý Vavřinec), a sandstone monument to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars, and a brick bell tower. The statue depicts the saint, the monument commemorates those who fell in both world wars, and the bell tower adds a distinct architectural feature. Religious, historical and architectural associations thus come together in the same area.
The connection to the surrounding terrain is also described precisely. A 14-meter-long strip of land leads to the fortified settlement. On its eastern side are sandstone steps set into the eastern slope. The strip of land and the steps form two successive elements of the approach. Together with the elevated area and the monuments, they create a picture shaped by the location, access and individual architectural features.
More historical traces and local theater
A gradually shrinking fortress mound from a former marshland fortress remains in the middle of a pond. This distinguishes this historical trace from the fortified settlement: here, the focus is on the surviving mound in its pond setting, while the fortified settlement is characterized by its elevated area, the surrounding water area and the monuments there.
The local theater ensemble is also among the village’s cultural attractions. It was revived in 2004; a municipal development program approved in 2021 recorded its continued activity. The years have different roles: 2004 marks the revival, while 2021 refers to the approved program. If performances are important to your stay, check the announcements for your travel dates.
Recreation, countryside and cycling
Two former sand extraction sites in Obědovice are used for recreation. Alongside the historical features, this brings a different kind of leisure use into view: the sites are connected with past sand extraction and are now used for recreation. Obědovice is also located in fertile, flat countryside. Cycle Route No. 4199 passes through the village, offering a specific option for travelers who would like to include cycling in their plans. The character of the countryside and the route are two different points of reference: one describes the village’s surroundings, the other the route through Obědovice.
