Černilov combines a gently rolling, agricultural landscape with church architecture and local cultural life. The village stretches for several kilometres along the Černilovský potok. In good visibility, views extend to the ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains and the Orlické Mountains. Long-distance views therefore depend on visibility; the landscape and the course of the stream shape the village’s character regardless.
Church Architecture Between Baroque and Pseudo-Romanesque
The Church of the Finding of St Stephen in Černilov was built between 1752 and 1756 to plans by Donato Morazzi, who came from Chrudim. Its slender tower is just under 40 metres high and visible from far across the surrounding area. Inside is a sandstone baptismal font dating from 1895—a clearly dated detail of the furnishings. The font therefore dates from considerably later than the building: 1895 is around 140 years after construction began in 1752.
The Central Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren provides a different architectural accent. It is built in the Pseudo-Romanesque style. Its rounded apse faces east, while the tower stands above the west façade and bears the inscription “POKOJ VÁM”. The interior furnishings include a single-manual organ and wall inscriptions with quotations from the Gospel of Luke and the Psalms.
The two churches can be compared by looking at different features: the Church of St Stephen stands out for its construction dates, slender tower and baptismal font; the Evangelical church for its architectural style, the orientation of its apse, the tower above the west façade and its inscriptions. The history of the village is thus reflected in more than one architectural detail.
Cultural Activities and an Annual Competition
The cultural and community centre serves as a leisure centre for residents of Černilov and the surrounding area. It hosts courses and group activities as well as lectures, sports and exercise activities, concerts and discussion events. Meetings of interest groups and support groups are also part of the programme. The programme may change; if you are coming for a specific activity, check in advance what is currently taking place.
Children’s fishing competitions at Dolejšák are a traditional annual event for young anglers and their families. Dates and participation requirements may vary. If you would like to include the competition in your travel plans, check these details in advance.
A Former Church and Its Conversion
The history of the village also includes the former Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession. It was completed in 1824. In 1969, the local National Committee took over the building; it was subsequently converted into a funeral hall. Its completion and later conversion mark different stages in the building’s history.
