Orchards surround Hvozdnice on three sides, with forest to the north. The municipality lies on the southern slope of a gentle hill, 9 km west of Hradec Králové.
Educational trail and archaeological history
The educational trail “Cesta do minulosti Libčan a Hvozdnic” takes visitors through the history of Libčany and Hvozdnice and also focuses on unique archaeological finds. The route runs from Libčany to Hvozdnice near Hradec Králové in eastern Bohemia and has six stops. The educational trail also includes six information boards. The first written references to settlement in Hvozdnice date from 1073.
Archaeological research is also part of local history: by 2017, archaeologists from the Museum in Hradec KrálovĂ© had excavated more than 150 graves in Hvozdnice. The burial mound site MohylnĂk Hvozdnice is also part of the archaeological heritage. It lies within the cadastral area of LibÄŤany, but is traditionally associated more with Hvozdnice. At this site, therefore, the administrative location and traditional association do not coincide.
Fruit growing and the landscape
Fruit growing in Hvozdnice has a tradition dating back to before the First World War. Initially, cherries and sour cherries were the main crops. After the Second World War, the local agricultural cooperative greatly expanded the orchards and began growing other types of fruit as well, especially apples. This development provides historical context for the landscape shaped by orchards: it spans the early focus on particular crops through to the wider range of varieties grown later.
Forest pavilion and sporting opportunities
The Lesnà altán Hvozdnice forest pavilion lies between Hvozdnice and Libčany in Zádušnà les, near Libušina studánka. It offers a place to stop and rest. The pavilion has been renovated and supplemented with a rope centre for children and an information board about the history of the site. This named location thus brings together a place to rest, an activity for children and a local history topic.
Hvozdnice has a new multi-purpose sports field for tennis, volleyball, football tennis, small-sided football and basketball. The choice of sports may be a factor in your travel planning if you want to include opportunities for exercise when choosing where to stay. As local conditions can change, check the current status before using the facilities.
Water mill and Hornà Renešák
The former Hvozdnický mlýn water mill lies on the southwestern edge of the municipality and is not open to visitors. Check access arrangements locally before visiting. The mill was built around 1573 by Václav Nejedlý, owner of the Libčany estate and son of Petr Nejedlý of Vysoká.
Hornà Renešák, the middle of three bodies of water, is associated with the mill. It probably originated in the 16th century, though an earlier origin cannot be ruled out. The water was used for fish farming for Libčany Castle and, above all, to power the Hvozdnický mlýn. This helps place the former use of the water in context alongside the history of the building.
