Castle history, memorials and a forest educational trail each offer a different focus in Dolní Přím. When planning a trip, it therefore helps to start by asking whether you are mainly interested in the development of the castle, the different forms of historic memorials, or a trail with educational and play stations. These topics belong to the same municipal area, but describe different aspects of the place.
Castle history and the year 1866
Dolní Přím Castle was created by extensively transforming a Renaissance fortress into a Baroque castle between 1681 and 1714. The Italian architect Carlo Antonio Lurago also took part in the renovation. The terms Renaissance fortress and Baroque castle here refer to the starting point and outcome of the same architectural transformation, not to two separate buildings. The castle’s history thus offers a clear chronological and architectural narrative.
Another chapter belongs to the Austro-Prussian War of 1866: a military hospital was housed in the castle at the time, and the building was damaged again. The building’s development and a specific wartime event therefore stand side by side as distinct historical perspectives. The municipality of Dolní Přím, including its administratively affiliated parts, is also located within the “Battlefield of the Battle of Hradec Králové” landscape heritage zone. This designation broadens the focus from the castle to the municipality as a whole and gives the local history a landscape context.
Memorials in different forms
There are two memorials with different designs in the municipal area. IR 74 is a sandstone obelisk on a pedestal, featuring a large relief of the Austrian eagle. Cast-iron plaques bear inscriptions in Czech and German. U sv. Aloise, by contrast, is a sandstone cross on a pedestal; black granite plaques bear inscriptions in Czech and German. The comparison is clear: here is the obelisk with its relief and cast-iron plaques, and there the cross with granite plaques.
The castle chapel offers another way to explore the castle’s history: following a comprehensive reconstruction, it is now used for concerts and other social events. If a concert is a deciding factor for your trip, check the specific dates. Another historic feature of Dolní Přím is the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, which is registered as an immovable cultural monument.
Forest trail and getting around
The Dolní Přím forest trail is located in a wooded area called Bažantnice, on the western edge of Dolní Přím. It has 12 educational stations and 2 play stations. This offers a different focus for planning your trip alongside the castle and memorials: a forest trail combining educational and play stations.
Dolní Přím lies approximately 10 kilometres west of Hradec Králové, in the direction of Nový Bydžov. The municipality has very good bus connections. If you are planning to travel by bus, check the timetable for your travel date before setting off. This lets you take both the historical attractions and the forest trail into account when planning your stay, without presenting them as a fixed itinerary.
