Křenek lies on the right bank of the Elbe in the northern part of the Praha-východ District. The village can be explored through two defining features: the river landscape with Křenecké Lake and a settlement structure dating back to the Middle Ages. Walking and cycling are among the options, as is learning about the village’s development.

The Elbe, cycling routes and Křenecké Lake

The international Labská stezka No. 2 runs along the banks of the Elbe in Křenek; cycle route 0039 passes through the village. The routes therefore have different connections to Křenek: one follows the banks of the Elbe here, while the other passes through the village itself. The flat landscape, with a mosaic of vegetation along former Elbe meanders, is suitable for walking and cycling.

Křenecké Lake lies at the northern edge of Křenek, on the border with the neighbouring municipality of Ovčáry. The lake was formed on the site of the former Na Homolce hill: a gravel and sand pit was excavated there from 1958 to 1963. The river landscape and a body of water shaped by its history of use thus represent different aspects of the local natural environment.

Křenecké Lake is a natural bathing area. Its facilities include a car campsite and sports facilities. If these amenities are important to your plans, check their current operating status before travelling. This will help you plan your time at the lake around what is actually available on site.

A medieval village layout

Křenek’s surviving settlement structure has medieval origins. The original village developed around a circular village green that is still well preserved today. The village’s founding is also connected to the river: Křenek was founded at a ford across the Elbe and probably began as a group of farmsteads on a promontory between the river’s meanders. The village green provides a tangible point of reference for connecting this history with the village’s layout today.

Other historical traces can be placed in context by their dates. The oldest surviving crosses in Křenek date from 1830. The war memorial dates from 1924 and was created by the sculptor Emanuel Klose from Lysá nad Labem. These years bring different chapters of the village’s history into focus without conflating them into a single event.

The history of the school is also part of the story: in 1895, Křenek established an independent school in its own building. The former school building was restored in 1998 and converted into the Obecní hospoda village tavern; its official opening took place on 1 July 1999. If you plan to visit, check its current operating status in advance.

Plan your stay around your interests

For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish between the options: if cycling and the flat landscape are your main interests, the two route connections and the paths along former Elbe meanders can help guide your plans. If you would like to spend time by the water, Křenecké Lake is a destination in its own right. For a cultural perspective, the village green, crosses, memorial and school history offer insights into different periods of the village’s development.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide which of these themes you want to shape your stay. This way, you can base your choice on the activities and subjects that interest you in Křenek, rather than trying to impose a set itinerary on the village’s different offerings. Nature, water and history each offer a distinct way to experience a stay on the right bank of the Elbe.
