A Gothic origin, an archaeologically significant hillfort and viewpoints overlooking the Vltava reveal different sides of Klecany. When planning your stay, you can choose what to focus on: are you particularly interested in architectural history and ancient fortifications, views of the river valley, or a cycling route and the ferry? The historic sites, scenic viewpoints and transport options offer different perspectives on the town.

Church, Château and Hillfort

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is first mentioned in written records in 1332. It was originally a Gothic building, later remodelled in the Baroque style. Its architectural history can thus be seen as a sequence of two phases: the Gothic origins were followed by a Baroque transformation.

It is also worth distinguishing between the different periods in the history of Klecany Château. A fortress stood on its site and is mentioned as early as 1380; the château itself is documented from 1607. The two dates therefore refer to different structures: first, the fortress on the château site, and later, the château. This makes it possible to distinguish the earlier fortification from the château’s later history.

The Klecany hillfort is classified as an important archaeological site. It lies southwest of the town, between Klecany and the Vltava, above the river’s right bank. It covered around 5.8 hectares and was fortified all around. In places, an earthen rampart is still visible in the landscape. The area figure conveys the extent of the site, while the rampart is a specific feature that has survived to this day.

Viewpoints and a Route to the Vltava

The Vyhlídka viewpoint above the Vltava offers views of the river valley, Levý Hradec and a lock. By contrast, the steep rock and a wooden cross at its summit are defining features of the Vyhlídka nad jezem viewpoint. The focus is therefore on different details: named views at one, and the viewpoint’s striking position on the rock at the other.

The Čertovka path, mostly man-made, leads from the hillfort to the Vltava. Its route thus connects two specific landmarks in the landscape. If you are interested in the relationship between the fortification and the river, this path is a distinct local attraction alongside the viewpoints and the history of the buildings.

Cycling Route, Ferry and Remembrance

Long-distance cycling route No. 7, “Labská stezka Praha–Drážďany” (Elbe Trail Prague–Dresden), passes through the Klecany district of Klecánky. The Klecánky ferry carries people, bicycles and small motorcycles; crossings at this location are documented as far back as 1911. For practical planning, the transport options mentioned and the ferry’s historical significance are two separate points to consider. As no timetable is provided here, it is advisable to check the ferry times before setting out.

Černá skála is also linked to the history of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk: a memorial plaque commemorates his visit on 16 July 1920. The annual memorial procession in his honour ends at Černá skála on the eve of 7 March; locally, the site is also known as “Masarykova skála”. If you would like to plan your trip around this commemoration, check the specific event date in advance.
