Klíčany lies about 14 kilometres north of central Prague and about 19 kilometres west of Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav. The area has a distinctly agricultural character. These two distances offer two ways to orient yourself when choosing where to stay: the location in relation to the two cities mentioned, and a distinct local character reflected in its architectural history, memorials and cycling route. This can help you decide whether Klíčany, with its own local points of interest, fits your travel plans, or whether connections towards Prague matter more.

Location and Getting There

The D8 motorway and road II/608 run through the cadastral area of Klíčany. Prague’s suburban transport connects Klíčany with the capital. Bus routes 370 and 372 serve the connection between Kobylisy, Zdiby, Klíčany and Odolena Voda. If you plan to travel by bus, check the current timetable before setting off. The road references locate the village within the wider area; the bus routes specify a particular corridor linking the four places.

Architectural History and the Chapel

The first written mention of Klíčany dates from 1380. The year 1774 is also important to the village’s history: its oldest surviving structure is a bell tower dating from that year, and the Baroque chapel is dated to 1774 as well. The chapel stands in a small park. Its façade has a triangular gable, and a prism-shaped bell tower crowns the building. The gable and tower give the chapel two clearly identifiable architectural features: the gable forms a triangular top to the façade, while the prism shape describes the bell tower. The date is therefore not just a year; it can be linked to a specific architectural form and a setting in a small park.

Memorials on Hlavní Street

The monument to the victims of the First World War stands on Hlavní Street, beside the main road from Zdiby to Postřižín. Its inscription commemorates liberation and the fallen soldiers. The Josef Cerha Memorial is also on Hlavní Street; it records his death on 7 May 1945. The two memorials emphasise different things: the first focuses on liberation and the fallen soldiers, while the second commemorates a named individual and a specific date. Those interested in the history of remembrance can thus consider two distinct forms of commemoration alongside the village’s architectural history.

Klíčany on the Cycling Route

Cycling route 8267 connects Zdiby-Přemyšlení, Klecany, Klíčany, Panenské Břežany and Odolena Voda-Dolínek. Klíčany can therefore also be viewed as part of a route linking several places, rather than solely through its own architectural and memorial sites. This offers a different perspective when planning a cycling trip: instead of visiting individual local points of interest, you can consider the places named along the cycling route as a connected sequence. When considering accommodation in Klíčany, the question is not only what you would like to see in the village, but also whether the route suits your other destinations.
