Nový Vestec combines a specific local history with the protected natural area of Černý Orel in the forest above the settlement. The themes are easy to distinguish during a stay: reconstruction and the community bell tell the story of the place, while the protected area includes a variety of forest and meadow habitats. Other highlights include Foerster’s musical history, the bridge between Nový Vestec and Káraný, and the area’s former recreational use along the Jizera.

Reconstruction and the Community Bell

The present-day settlement of Nový Vestec was rebuilt in 1777 northeast of the former settlement of Vesce. The date refers to the reconstruction of the present-day settlement; Vesce is the geographical reference point. This clearly distinguishes this part of the local history from the history of the community bell.

The bell bears the year 1837, when it was hung, and weighs 25 kilograms. It was made from a piece of wood from a hundred-year-old oak. Together, 1777 and 1837 represent two different historical details: the reconstruction of the settlement and the hanging of the bell. Anyone interested in local history will find specific dates and a detail about its craftsmanship here, rather than just a general reference to the age of the place.

Foerster’s Musical History

The composer Foerster spent the last three years of his life in Nový Vestec. He also wrote his final work there, the “Vestecký kvartet.” The place is thus associated both with a substantial period in his biography and with a specific work. These two connections give the musical history different scales, ranging from the composer’s final years to a named piece.

The Černý Orel Protected Area

The protected natural monument of Černý Orel lies in the forest above Nový Vestec. It protects a natural oak forest typical of the Elbe Lowlands, growing on gravelly-sandy terraces along the Jizera and Labe rivers. The forest type and its location are closely connected: the landscape is described not only by its oaks, but also by the river terraces.

The protected area also includes continental dune grasslands, extensively mown meadows ranging from lowlands to uplands, oak-hornbeam forests and old acidophilous oak forests. A habitat of the dusky large blue butterfly is also part of the area. These sites illustrate the variety of protected features: alongside several types of forest are meadows and dune grasslands, as well as the habitat of a particular butterfly species. This gives nature enthusiasts a more detailed picture than the term oak forest alone.

Other Historical and Thematic Connections

The Naučná stezka Krajinou Rudolfa II educational trail focuses on history and nature. Its theme therefore brings together two perspectives that are also useful for understanding Nový Vestec: the history of a place and its landscape. The bridge between Nový Vestec and Káraný adds a specific connection between two named places. It was built in 1936 and reconstructed in 1994; the two dates mark its construction and later reconstruction.

Bouda Jizerka is also part of the Jizera’s historical recreational history. It was built for summer visitors as a summer restaurant with a dance floor and as a sunbathing area on the riverbank. Dining, dancing and sunbathing were distinct parts of its original concept. Anyone interested in the history of summer holidays will get a different perspective on the region here than from local history or nature conservation alone.

The themes can be explored according to your interests without combining them into a single route: Foerster’s years of life and work represent musical history, the bell and the reconstruction tell the story of the settlement, and Černý Orel represents nature and landscape conservation. The educational trail, bridge and Bouda Jizerka each add their own thematic connection to this picture.
