Herink can be explored through different kinds of local history: a protected solitary tree, the ponds’ former uses, a chapel and archaeological finds. The municipal walk “Máme rádi Herink” offers an educational and entertaining way to discover the village.
A Walk with Stops
At the stops marked on a map, QR-code signs provide information, images or maps about each location. This helps clarify the connection between the content and the place; images, maps and information offer different ways to explore it. If you are interested in local topics, the activity combines a walk through Herink with insights into each location.
Ponds and Former Village Gatherings
V topolech, also called Na obci, was once a meeting place for the whole village. Former uses included burning witches, ice skating in winter and summer gatherings of neighbours around a fire. In suitable weather, young people from the entire surrounding area also swam in the pond. The pond’s history thus ranges from community gatherings to seasonal leisure activities.
Herink’s water and landscape history also includes Na Hrázi Street: part of the street was once the embankment of the largest of several ponds in Herink. It held back water from the Osnický potok stream and the surrounding fields. While V topolech illustrates the pond’s former use as a gathering place, Na Hrázi represents an embankment’s role in retaining water. Together, they reveal two distinct aspects of the ponds’ history.
Chapel and Protected Solitary Tree
A chapel was built on Staré návsi in 1908, next to a granite cross. Herink’s chapel is still considered a worthwhile destination for a walk. Another dated landmark is Lípa u transformátoru v Herinku: this protected solitary tree was first designated on 25 January 1983. For the chapel, the focus is on the year it was built; for the tree, it is the date it was first designated. These two dates illustrate different aspects of local history: a building and the protection of a natural monument.
Traces of the Past in Archaeology
A rescue excavation near the Čistička stop uncovered settlement traces within the cadastral area of Herink. The oldest settlement identified there dates to the 6th to 5th century BC. The Čistička archaeological site yielded the remains of large above-ground wooden structures, pottery fragments and a glass bead. The early dating and the specific finds offer two different insights into this place: the settlement’s chronological context and the objects and structural remains uncovered there.
Another archaeological find comes from Tvrzka. There, earth ramparts were discovered in the 1930s during maintenance work on the streambed. Compared with the oldest dating at Čistička, this find is much closer to the present day. Herink’s archaeological traces thus range from a settlement dating to the 6th to 5th century BC to a discovery from the 1930s.
