Roztoky offers several different ways to spend your stay: whitewater slalom, hiking trails and geological features along the Berounka. The surroundings are characterised by wooded hills and deep, rocky river valleys. At Areál u jezu, there are opportunities for picnics, swimming and sports activities. When planning, you can weigh up activities on the water, trails through the landscape and interests in nature or geology.

Water and landscape along the Berounka

The slalom course in Roztoky is 250 metres long, of which 180 metres are an artificial slalom course. Around 45 gates are available for training. Use is subject to operating arrangements. These specific details make whitewater slalom a distinctive aspect of a stay, without making it the only option by the river.

At Areál u jezu, the focus is on picnicking, swimming and sports activities. Together with the wooded hills and deep, rocky valleys of the Berounka, this creates a contrast between the riverbank and the surrounding landscape. Which of these different aspects interests you most can help shape your plans for your days in Roztoky.

U Eremita: nature trail and geology

The U Eremita Nature Reserve protects natural forest communities with an abundance of yew trees on rocky scree slopes, as well as an active calcareous tufa area. The U Eremita nature trail starts on the road from Roztoky to Karlova Ves, at the mouth of the Klučná stream where it meets the Berounka, near an arched bridge. It is classified as a moderately difficult walking route and introduces the diversity of tree and shrub species characteristic of Křivoklátsko through 35 species.

The U Eremita geological site is also on the Berounka: on the right bank between Branov and Roztoky, approximately halfway along the nature trail, west of the mouth of the Klučná. It includes a calcareous spring and Quaternary calcareous tufa deposits at a tectonically influenced contact between the andesites of the Křivoklátsko-Rokycany Belt and Neoproterozoic shales. As a geotope and geotourism attraction, the site offers a geological focus alongside the nature trail’s plant diversity.

More trails and destinations

The Kaňonem Berounky za eremitem walking route starts and ends at a car park in Roztoky near the whitewater slalom channel. As trail conditions can change, it is a good idea to check them before setting out. The red trail of the Czech Tourist Club (KČT), route 0001, also passes through Roztoky. At 202.5 kilometres, it extends well beyond the town: it starts in Zvíkovec and follows the Berounka, Vltava and Sázava rivers to the Vysočina Region.

For views of Roztoky and the Berounka, head to the refurbished viewpoint on the Na Babě rocky ridge; a well-marked hiking trail leads there. Another nearby option is Křivoklát Castle. From Roztoky, it can be reached via an approximately two-kilometre footpath that passes the Paraplíčko viewpoint. Both destinations complement the local hiking and nature themes, but offer different points of interest: Na Babě looks out over the town and river, while the route to the castle leads to a named historic destination.
