An early Baroque church, a late Baroque wayside chapel and a half-timbered upper floor each add a distinct note to Děkov’s architectural history. At the same time, the village lies in the landscape of Džbán Nature Park, characterised by fields, meadows, hop gardens and forests. Anyone planning a stay can think of Děkov in terms of two clear themes: rural architecture and a varied landscape traditionally shaped by hop growing. Two practical details are also important for travel and a possible cycling trip: Děkov has no rail connection, and a section of cycle route 8167 leads to Děkov.
Church and Village History
The Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist is early Baroque and dates from 1664. It was built on the site of an older place of worship, mentioned as early as 1361. These two dates mark different stages of history: 1664 refers to the church building, while 1361 refers to the earlier sacred site. Later alterations are also part of the building’s history. The church was remodelled in 1729 and extended in 1868. The western part of the nave was probably lengthened and a choir gallery added at that time. The earliest recorded mentions of the village of Děkov date back to 1325. The village, the site of the earlier place of worship and the church building each therefore have their own historical reference points.
Architecture in the Village
Kaplička pod lipami is a late Baroque wayside chapel with a square floor plan and richly articulated architecture. Four newly planted lime trees surround it. House No. 23 showcases a different type of construction: the elongated building has a half-timbered upper floor. Together with the church, the chapel and house illustrate different features of local architectural history, from a religious building to an individual house. Architecture enthusiasts can use these differences as a guide to understanding the various forms found in the village.
The layout of the buildings is also distinctive: Děkov is a compact rural street village. Original farmsteads line the main road, while the settlement spreads out around the village square. This means that individual buildings can be considered alongside the spatial layout of the village: the row of farmsteads along the road gives way to a broader area around the square.
Landscape and Hop Growing
Děkov lies in a varied landscape with a mosaic of fields, meadows, hop gardens and forests. Traditional hop growing is part of the village’s character. One specifically named landscape feature is Děkovská stráň: it is a registered significant landscape feature with heat-loving grassland communities on steep slopes and around rock outcrops. The Zlatý potok rises within the territory of Děkov and offers another specific point of reference in the local landscape. Together, these details show different aspects of the surroundings: the mosaic across the municipal area, the distinctive vegetation on the slopes and the source of a stream.
Plan a Cycling Trip and Your Journey
For cyclists, cycle route 8167 is a useful reference point: it includes the Vlkov–Děkov section and is part of the 42.9-kilometre Klečetné–Třeboc route. The 42.9 kilometres refer to the entire route, not just the Vlkov–Děkov section. If you plan to use the cycle route, check the route details again before setting out. For travel to Děkov, note that it has no rail connection. If you plan to travel by train, take this into account when choosing where to arrive.
