Milostín combines local history with a landscape shaped by agriculture. The Church of St. Michael the Archangel, the William Hoelscher memorial and the hop fields each add a different emphasis. When planning your trip, you can consider architectural history, a specific remembrance of the Second World War and the tradition of hop growing as distinct themes.
Church and Remembrance
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel is a freestanding building made of stone and brick masonry. Its choir ends in three sides, and the tower stands in front of the southwest façade. The building’s materials, the shape of the choir’s end and the tower’s position can be considered separately. The three-sided choir end describes the finish of the chancel, while the tower’s position identifies a specific side of the façade. The church is therefore notable not only for its name, but also for its architectural features.
The memorial to American pilot William Hoelscher commemorates 25 April 1945. Hoelscher was a pilot in the 4th Fighter Group of the 8th US Air Force. After his damaged Mustang was over Milostín, he bailed out and was rescued by Czech patriots. This sequence gives the commemoration a clear point of reference: the damaged aircraft, the bailout over Milostín and the rescue by Czech patriots. Alongside the architectural history, it recalls a precisely dated event in the town’s history.
Hops and Landscape
Hop growing has a long tradition in Milostín, and hop fields are part of its agriculture-shaped landscape. The tradition and the fields shed light on the same aspect from two perspectives: as a local crop and as part of the character of the landscape. The registered landscape feature V Hané offers a different focus. It is the source area of the Lišanský Brook, with moisture-loving meadow communities and occurrences of the European globeflower. The hop fields and the source area therefore represent different landscape themes; at V Hané, wet meadows and the globeflower are the specific natural features.
Sokol Hall and Training
Sokol Hall is a historic building dating from 1900. The Sokol group also invites women and men to train there regularly. The program includes yoga, trampoline training and Tabata. The activities therefore offer different forms of exercise at a named location. If you are considering taking part during your stay, check in advance whether and when this is possible, and review the latest program details.
