Kalivody offers specific ways to combine a stay with hiking and regional history: two circular routes, an annual hiking and Nordic walking event, beech forests and signs of former hard-coal mining. Approximate route lengths and the different paths can help you choose a hike. Bučinami ke štole Jindřich is a shorter woodland loop; Za falešnou borovicà passes several named places and offers views of the surrounding valleys.
Hiking: Two Circular Routes
The Bučinami ke štole Jindřich hike is an approximately six-kilometre circular route. It starts at the rest area next to the inn in Kalivody and runs mostly along forest roads and trails. The route is unmarked and unsuitable for walks with a stroller. Along the way, it passes a shelter with play features, including a wooden xylophone.
The Za falešnou borovicĂ circular route is approximately eleven kilometres long. From Kalivody, it goes through BdĂn and over Mount Vošková to PĹ™erubenice, then returns to Kalivody. Views of the surrounding valleys give this longer loop a different focus from the BuÄŤinami ke štole JindĹ™ich woodland loop. The approximate distances and described routes can help you choose a hike based on the distance you want to cover and the landscapes you prefer.
Beech Landscapes and Džbán Nature Park
The DolĂky landscape near Kalivody is part of DĹľbán Nature Park. The park protects this landscape, which is characterised by long, deep valleys and extensive forests dominated mainly by beech. The KalivodskĂ© buÄŤiny beech woods are another example of this landscape: the site, which is of European importance, covers almost 200 hectares, and the beech trees are up to 150 years old. This gives you two different perspectives on the region: the broad valleys and forests of the nature park, and the specifically named beech woods.
Forest Knowledge and Mining History
A panel on the Naučná stezka Kalivodské bučiny nature trail provides information about forest management, the importance of old and dead trees to forest life, and the importance of beech to people. Another panel along the hike covers coal mining in the Kalivody area and points out the Jindřich coal adit, about 50 metres away. Štola Jindřich is associated with deep mining of hard coal around the turn of the 20th century. The hike thus touches on forest topics and local industrial history, each with its own focus.
Local storytelling traditions also include tales told in the area about the Lord of Kalivody, who had a black soul. These add another local perspective to the nature and mining themes, without requiring an additional route.
An Annual Event in June
The Kalivodské hůlkovánà hiking and Nordic walking event takes place every year on the last Saturday in June. It is open to everyone who wants to take part in the hike. If you are planning your trip specifically around the event, check the exact date in advance.
Before You Set Out
Kalivody is outside the marked hiking trails, cycling trails and cycle touring routes. The Bučinami ke štole Jindřich hike is also unmarked. When planning a hike, check the described route before setting out and take the trail conditions into account. For the shorter loop, this means paying particular attention to the fact that it runs mostly along forest roads and trails and is unsuitable for walks with a stroller.
