Prŭhonice brings together cultural history, botany, and landscape. The château, the Romanesque church, Průhonice Park, and the Průhonice Dendrological Garden each offer a different focus: from a rebuilt castle complex and medieval murals to tree species, plant taxa, and viewpoints. When planning your visit, you can consider these themes separately rather than combining them into a single sightseeing itinerary.

Park Landscape and Plant Diversity

Průhonice Park was laid out in the Botič Valley with a combination of native and introduced exotic tree species. The valley defines the landscape setting, while the mix of tree species gives the park its botanical character. Together, these details offer a more specific impression of the park than a single viewpoint does.

The Průhonice Dendrological Garden offers a different perspective on plants: it covers 72.8 hectares and includes almost 10,000 plant taxa. It opened to the public in 1991. Seasonal themed plant exhibitions add changing focal points to the collection. The area and number of taxa convey its scale, while the exhibitions also highlight seasonal themes.

The Château and Historical Records

Today’s Průhonice Château was created through repeated alterations to an originally medieval Gothic castle complex. The Romanesque Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, the complex’s oldest monument, is located within the château grounds.

The church was consecrated in 1187. Gothic linear frescoes dating from the first half of the 14th century were discovered on its walls in 1890. The two dates mark different milestones: 1187 is the year the church was consecrated, while 1890 is when the much later wall paintings were discovered. This distinction helps keep the building’s history separate from the art history, without confusing the frescoes’ discovery with the period in which they were created.

The exhibition “Průhonice Château and Park, a Work of Nature and the Human Spirit,” in the château’s ground-floor rooms, presents the history of the château and park. It also includes a memorial room dedicated to Count Arnošt Emanuel Silva-Tarouca. Apart from the exhibitions and visitor center, Průhonice Château is not open to the public. Check the accessibility of the exhibitions and visitor center before your trip; this does not mean that the château’s rooms are generally accessible.

Viewpoints and Landscape Features

The Gloriet lookout tower stands on a rocky outcrop formed by a meander in the Botič. The tower was reconstructed in 2010, restoring its function as a viewpoint. Its history therefore connects a specific landscape feature with a dated construction project.

The Hlavní vyhlídka route passes from centuries-old oaks with rhododendrons growing beneath them, through meadows in the Botič Valley and past both main ponds, to the viewing terrace in the château courtyard. This sequence describes a route through several landscape features, not just a single viewpoint.

The Kaskáda sedmi Holských rybníků offers a different kind of landscape design: it is a chain of seven ponds created at the beginning of the 18th century. The features described therefore differ markedly in scale: the Gloriet is tied to a rocky outcrop, the Hlavní vyhlídka route passes through several landscape areas, and the Kaskáda consists of a historic succession of ponds.
