Petrov is located in the Posázaví region on the right bank of the Sázava, five kilometres from Jílové u Prahy. There are several ways to make the most of a stay: trails in the Sázava area, viewpoints and the history of gold mining. If you are looking for accommodation in Petrov, you can start by deciding whether hiking, the landscape or local history is your main priority.
Hills and Viewpoints
The hill Ďábel lies above Petrov and reaches a height of 398 metres. An information board stands at its summit; summit facilities may change. From the summit, oak woodland blocks the view, while the forest edge offers a good vantage point. If the view is your destination, bear this difference in mind when planning. Vegetation and visibility can change over time.
The Třeštibok Nature Monument offers a different landscape, on the rocky right bank of the Sázava Canyon. Away from the rocks, the area is covered by naturally composed woodland. A hiking route with a nature trail runs through Třeštibok.
The Třeštibok viewpoint in Petrov-Bohuliby offers an unobstructed view of the Sázava. From there, a yellow-marked hiking trail leads in about ten minutes to the Vyhlídka Hadí skála viewpoint, which offers a similar view of the river. This connects two viewpoints along a specific route; the stated walking time is approximate.
Nature Trails and Hiking Routes
The Medník nature trail is about five kilometres long and has 14 stops. Its length and number of stops provide two specific reference points for fitting the route into your day’s plans.
The Posázavská Trail runs along the Sázava in the Petrov area, between Pikovice and Kamenný Přívoz. It has only gentle gradients and is suitable for families with children and dogs, but not accessible with a pushchair. This distinction is also relevant when choosing a route for hikers looking for a trail with gentle gradients.
Střed Čech Nature Park has a dense network of trails, making hiking and cycling possible in the area around Petrov. Check trail conditions and signage when planning a specific route, as both can change. The information about gradients and pushchair accessibility applies to the Posázavská Trail; it cannot automatically be applied to other trails.
Local History
Petrov was probably founded in the 13th century by monks from Ostrovský Monastery. The village was first mentioned in writing in 1310. The tentative account of its founding is part of the town’s history, as is the dated record of its first written mention.
Gold mining also has a long history here: medieval gold mining is documented in Petrov. Gold was mined in the eastern cadastral area until 1968. Alongside its medieval beginnings, anyone interested in the town’s history will also find a clearly dated connection to the more recent past.
Getting There and Planning Your Stay
Petrov has two railway stations, Petrov Chlomek and Petrov u Prahy, on the Posázavský pacifik line. The Medník nature trail starts at Petrov u Prahy station; the Posázavská Trail can also be accessed by train via this station. Check current rail services and timetables before travelling.
Canoeists can reach the Pikovice–Petrov bridge via the Sázava. Check access to the river and local conditions before setting out. If you are considering Petrov as a place to stay, you can base your choice on your plans: trails and viewpoints, arriving by train or access to the Sázava each offer a different focus. Depending on the excursion you are planning, timetables, trail conditions and river access each require separate checks.
