Explore Kadlín from three different perspectives: take in the landscape from the observation tower, discover architectural history at the Church of St. James the Greater, and learn about rural crafts and agriculture in the exhibitions. Alongside far-reaching views, you’ll find practical insights into tools, machinery and crops. Each attraction has a different focus: the tower and nature trail are about views and nature, while the exhibitions focus on crafts and agricultural work.

Views and Trails near Hradišť

The Hradišť observation tower stands on a hill above Kadlín. Its covered observation platform is 15 metres above the ground. From there, you can see Bezděz, Ralsko, Ještěd, the Jizera Mountains, the Krkonoše Mountains, Milešovka in the České středohoří, Říp, and nearby Vrátenská hora with its observation tower in the Polomené hory. The view takes in both individual prominent peaks and named mountain ranges and landscape areas.

Wooden signposts marked “Hradišť” point from Kadlín to the observation tower. From there, a paved path of less than half a kilometre leads to it. If you’re heading to the tower, follow these signs and use the short distance as a practical guide when planning your visit.

The Hradišť nature trail shifts the focus from the view to plants and the regional landscape. Mixtures of old Bohemian meadow plants have been sown along the path. Rest benches with information boards about mammals, insects and birds complement the information about plants with details about local wildlife. Different nature topics are presented side by side: the meadow mixtures along the path and the boards covering these animal groups.

Church and Architectural History

The Church of St. James the Greater is a prominent landmark in Kadlín’s history. It was first mentioned as a parish church in 1384. Originally Gothic, it was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1724. The two dates offer different historical insights: the 1384 reference relates to its role as a parish church, while the 1724 remodelling marks a later change to its architecture.

In addition to the church, the protected church complex includes the bell tower, mortuary chapel, perimeter wall and plots within the enclosed area. Those interested in architectural history can explore not only the development of the church building, but also the other features of the protected complex.

Exhibitions on Crafts and Agriculture

The rural blacksmith exhibition recreates the home and workshop of a village blacksmith, with hammers, tongs and a forge, as well as items made using these tools. The exhibition of old agricultural technology, by contrast, focuses on machinery used for fieldwork. Examples on display include ploughs, seed drills and threshing machines. Together, the exhibitions offer two different perspectives on rural work: blacksmithing and the agricultural equipment used in the fields.

The exhibition of hoes traces their history from the Hradišť find to the present day. On display are a hoe found there as a historical museum piece, hoes made in the smithy and a hoe from the 21st century. The comparison illustrates different stages in the craft without limiting the exhibits to a single period.

The regional crops exhibition focuses on rye, wheat and barley. Visitors can hold the grains, crush them and smell them. They can also learn about 15 different decimal scales. This focus differs from the machinery exhibitions: here, the subjects are crops and scales, while those exhibitions cover tools and machines. Kadlín thus offers several hands-on ways to explore rural history, from the church’s architecture to the objects used in everyday work.
