Hořín brings together several distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: castle history and heritage conservation, water engineering, and a guided animal experience. The castle is currently being reconstructed; the chapel and lock structure represent further aspects of architectural history. In the municipality, Zoopark Zelčín offers guided tours and supervised access to selected animal enclosures. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between historic buildings, the castle’s ongoing conversion, and visitor offerings that may change.
Hořín Castle: History and Ongoing Reconstruction
Hořín Castle was built around 1696 to a design by Alliprandi. It is currently undergoing extensive reconstruction, with the aim of restoring the cultural monument and converting it into a hotel. Its construction date and the current work mark different chapters in its history: the date points to its origins, while the reconstruction reflects its present-day transformation. Before travelling, check the progress of the work, especially if the planned hotel use affects your accommodation plans.
The protected castle grounds also include the Church of St. John of Nepomuk, a park and a romantic ruin. In addition to the main castle, the grounds therefore encompass sacred architecture, open space and a ruin. These features give the castle ensemble a broader scope than a single building.
The Lobkowicz Burial Chapel
The Lobkowicz Burial Chapel in Hořín offers a distinct architectural perspective. It includes an octagonal tomb building; “octagonal” describes a shape with eight sides. The chapel stands on a raised terrace in the cemetery. It can be reached via a stone staircase beside a semicircular wall with gravestones. The chapel therefore combines a geometric form with a specific access route—a different scale from the castle grounds and their many features.
The Lock Structure and Navigation Canal
The Hořín lock structure on the Hořín–Vraňany Canal was built by architect František Sander. The Vraňany–Hořín Navigation Canal, between Vraňany and Mělník, was built from 1902 to 1905 and is more than ten kilometres long. It allows boats to travel smoothly before reaching the mouth of the Elbe. This brings out the different scales: a single lock structure associated with its architect, and a waterway more than ten kilometres long, with its own construction period and navigational function. Those interested in engineering structures will find a different focus here than at the castle and chapel. Construction of the canal followed that of the castle more than two centuries later.
