When traveling to Yan’an, it is worth distinguishing Liulin as a local point of reference from attractions in the wider Yan’an area. Liulin is home to the historic site of the Southern District Supply and Marketing Cooperative and Mao Anying’s former residence in Wujiazaoyuan; the Revolutionary Memorial Site in the wider Yan’an area encompasses additional places. When looking for hotels in Yan’an, first decide whether local memorial sites or the broader cultural and revolutionary history should be the focus.
Getting to Liulin and finding your way around
Yan’an Nanniwan Airport is located in Shangjiagou Village in Liulin Township, southwest of Yan’an’s urban area and 13 kilometers from the city center. If you are planning to fly, check the current flight schedule in advance. The Xi’an–Yan’an railway, the Xi’an–Yan’an Expressway, and National Highway G210 also run through Liulin. The airport and transport routes answer different questions about location: the airport is in Liulin, and its distance is given in relation to the city center; the railway, expressway, and national highway run through Liulin. When comparing hotels, start by considering how close they are to the specific places and transport routes that matter for your trip.
Historic sites in Liulin
Liulin is home to two historic memorial sites: the historic site of the Southern District Supply and Marketing Cooperative and Mao Anying’s former residence in Wujiazaoyuan. The two sites represent different aspects of history: a cooperative site and a specifically identified former residence. The Yan’an South District Supply and Marketing Cooperative Memorial Museum is by the bridge near the Liulin Township government building. If you plan to visit either site, please check access arrangements in advance.
Revolutionary history in the wider Yan’an area
A description published in 2022 lists the Yan’an Revolutionary Memorial Site as a national 5A-rated tourist attraction and one of China’s first classic red tourism destinations. It includes Baota Mountain, the revolutionary memorial sites of Zaoyuan and Yangjialing, the former site of the Northwest Bureau of the Central Committee, and the Yan’an Revolutionary Memorial Hall. The Revolutionary Memorial Site thus encompasses several named places, not just a single building. At Baota Mountain, natural and cultural landscapes combine with historic monuments and revolutionary sites. The Yan’an Revolutionary Memorial Hall is on the east bank of the Yanhe River in Baota District, approximately one kilometer from the city center. Alongside Liulin’s historic sites, there are therefore several parts of the regional Revolutionary Memorial Site to choose from when deciding what to focus on during your stay. For orientation, distinguish between the similar-sounding names: Wujiazaoyuan refers to the former residence in Liulin, while Zaoyuan is one of the sites included in the larger Yan’an Revolutionary Memorial Site.
