Ankang offers culturally curious travelers several distinct perspectives: collections and exhibitions at the Ankang Museum, protected cultural heritage sites in the historic Dongguan Cultural District, and a long-standing dragon boat tradition. Each topic has its own focus: history and art sit side by side at the museum, Dongguan draws attention to the preservation of historic sites, while dragon boat culture encompasses both a local tradition and distinctive park design. When looking for a hotel in Ankang, it helps to first decide which of these focuses you want to shape your stay.

Collections and Exhibitions at the Ankang Museum

The Ankang Museum is located in Hanbin District, on Huangou Street in the northern riverside area, and is the only comprehensive museum in Ankang. Its collection comprises more than 40,000 objects, including nearly 1,000 precious cultural relics. As collections are updated, the figures may change. The museum offers a broad thematic framework, which is also reflected in the structure of its exhibitions.

The three core exhibitions are “Tianfu Ankang,” “Maipian Ankang” and “Zhumen Ankang.” They are joined by the special exhibitions “The History of Third Front Construction in Ankang” and “Masterpieces from the Collection of Chinese Calligraphy and Painting.” Their subject matter ranges from distinctive resources and human history to significant events and achievements, as well as Ankang’s future plans. The calligraphy and painting exhibition offers a separate focus on art. This gives visitors a range of ways into the subject matter, from historical developments to works from a collection. The exhibition structure may change; check which displays will be on view before your visit.

Preserving Cultural Heritage in the Historic Dongguan Cultural District

Protected cultural relics are at the heart of the historic Dongguan Cultural District. In 2020, the district was included in the third list of historical and cultural districts in Shaanxi Province. There are six protected cultural relics within the district. Wen’an Tower is classified as a major protected cultural relic at the provincial level. The district’s inclusion on a provincial list and Wen’an Tower’s classification represent different levels of cultural heritage protection. Dongguan is recognized as a historic district, while the tower is a specific monument with its own protection status. Official protection designations may change.

Dragon Boat Tradition and Hanjiang Culture Park

Dragon boat rowing has a long tradition in Ankang. This includes racing and watching the dragon boats; the tradition is widely practiced and popular. Hanjiang Dragon Boat Culture Park is located at the venue for the Ankang Dragon Boat Festival. Its design includes a dragon-shaped viewing stand and other elements of dragon culture. This brings together two distinct perspectives: the tradition of rowing, racing and watching, and the dragon motifs in the park’s design.

Seasonal Events and Customs

A seasonal events program on Laocheng Street is associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival and China’s National Day. Events under the theme “Intangible Cultural Heritage Meets Food” feature Han Diao Erhuang opera, stilt performances and traditional wedding customs, among other things. The theme therefore encompasses not only food but also performances and inherited customs. If an event like this is important to your trip, check the specific dates and program details in advance.
