Shaanxi was home to the capitals of 13 dynasties, including the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang. The province’s long history can be explored through a range of sites: the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, palace sites, museums, and the city wall each tell a different story. So, as you explore Shaanxi, you can distinguish between archaeological finds, dynastic politics, and visible architectural history.

The Qin Era: Mausoleum and Terracotta Army

The Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang is the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who established the first unified empire in Chinese history. It is located at the northern foot of Lishan Mountain, 35 kilometers northeast of Xi'an in Shaanxi Province. The Museum of the Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang comprises the Museum of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses and the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum Site Park, known as Lishan Garden.

The Terracotta Warriors and Horses are considered important works in the history of Chinese sculpture before the Han dynasty because of their exceptional technical and artistic quality. The focus here is therefore not only on the history of a ruler, but also on a distinct artistic tradition from before the Han dynasty. Those interested in the Qin era will find two different ways to explore it at the mausoleum and among the terracotta figures: the emperor’s historical role and the sculptures’ significance in art history.

Collections from the Shang to the Tang

The Shaanxi History Museum is located on East Xiaozhai Road in Xi'an's Yanta District. It houses 370,000 exhibits spanning more than one million years of history. Its collections include Shang dynasty bronzes dating from around the 16th to 11th centuries BCE, Han dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE) and Tang dynasty (618 to 907) gold and silver tableware, murals from Tang imperial tombs, and terracotta figures in various forms and poses.

The museum’s broad timeline makes it a different focus from the single Qin mausoleum: here, finds from several eras are displayed side by side. This allows you to broaden your perspective from the early Shang period through the Han and Tang to different forms of terracotta art. This distinction can help you choose according to your interests: the mausoleum brings together sites relating to one historical context, while the museum’s collections cover a broad span of time.

Tang Palace, Pagoda, and City Wall

The Daming Palace was a Tang dynasty palace complex where 17 of the dynasty’s 21 emperors conducted political affairs. Daming Palace National Heritage Park is located in Xi'an's New Town District. The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda offers another way to explore the city’s history: it is considered a symbol of old Xi'an and is part of the Silk Road: Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor cultural heritage World Heritage Site.

The Xi'an City Wall also tells a story spanning several periods. It was built more than 600 years ago as a military defense system on the foundations of an earlier structure from the Sui and Tang dynasties. Visitors can use a tour app that explains the wall’s history and its various sights. App features may change; check them before your visit. In contrast to the palace, associated with the political affairs of Tang emperors, the wall combines a later defensive structure with an earlier architectural foundation.

Huaqing Palace and Lishan Mountain

Huaqing Palace is located in Xi'an's Lintong District in Shaanxi Province. It is known for its hot spring and for stories associated with the Xi'an Incident and Tang palace culture. This topic therefore brings together both a landscape feature and historical narratives. Lishan Mountain near Huaqing Palace is 1,302 meters high; its named sights include Beacon Tower and Yuxian Bridge.

Shaanxi’s historical highlights differ considerably: the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang represents Qin history and sculpture, the Daming Palace represents Tang politics, and the Shaanxi History Museum offers a collection spanning multiple eras. Huaqing Palace and Lishan add hot springs, historical stories, and named mountain sights to these perspectives. You can use these differences to plan your discoveries and look for suitable accommodation in Shaanxi.
