The Weinan Museum is located along the middle section of Letian Avenue. Covering 35,874 square meters, it is dedicated to collecting, research and presentation, as well as scientific exchange and leisure activities.
Regional Culture at the Weinan Museum
The exhibition is divided into eight chronological sections. Through historical figures, events and achievements, it conveys the cultural characteristics of the Weinan region. The sequence provides a time frame for the presentation.
The exhibition concept includes scientific and educational approaches, as well as artistic and entertaining ones. Technologically supported interactive projects for visitors are also part of the exhibition design. The chronology organizes the content; different approaches shape how it is presented.
Architecture and Qin Heritage on Weinan Old Street
Weinan Old Street lies at the foot of Changshouyuan, on the banks of the Youhe River, in what was once Weinan’s bustling old town. Its three landmark structures are the gatehouse, the stage terrace and the Wenchang Pavilion. There are also 25 replica buildings of varying sizes and heights, modeled on residential architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
At the southern end of Old Street is the Qin Culture and Heritage Park. It was built on the remains of a platform for burning books dating from the Qin period. The platform is designated as a provincially protected heritage site and is considered the only surviving example of several such platforms. Different periods are represented here: the replica buildings draw on residential styles from the Ming and Qing dynasties, while the platform dates to the Qin period.
Shadow Puppetry and Performance Culture
At the Intangible Cultural Heritage Theater in the Weinan Culture and Arts Center, Xue Hongquan, an inheritor of Huaxian shadow puppetry, and his troupe regularly perform as a resident guest company. If you want to plan your visit around a performance, check the current schedule.
Weinan Railway Station offers a different format: its seven-meter-high and six-meter-wide lightbox display features a major work of Weinan shadow puppetry. The exhibition operates regularly, and its content is updated seasonally. Stage performances and a seasonally updated exhibition piece thus present shadow puppetry in different forms.
The northern area of Weinan Old Street is also geared toward performances, including Qin opera, large-scale dance and theater performances, and folk culture presentations. If you want to plan around these events, check the current schedule.
