Near Svoge, the Iskretska flows into the Iskar; this is also where Mala Planina, Golema Planina and Ponor meet. This combination of river landscape and mountains defines a municipality that is predominantly mountainous and includes parts of Mala Planina, Koznitsa, Golema Planina and the Iskar Gorge. The Iskar is the largest river crossing the municipality and is part of the gorge landscape. Exploring Svoge brings a variety of impressions: karst formations and caves, steep trails, waterfalls and cultural sites.
Trails through the landscape
The hiking routes vary both in length and in the destinations they connect. The Vazova Eco-Trail covers 3.22 kilometers, ranges in elevation from 442 to 933 meters and includes steep slopes. The Pod-Kamiko Trail is 6.47 kilometers long and passes an obrok dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, as well as an old settlement near Bov. The 4.83-kilometer route from Gara Bov to the Vazov House leads to the house where Ivan Vazov stayed.
Other routes cover longer distances: a 9.5-kilometer route between Eliseyna and the Seven Thrones Monastery also includes Latinsko Kale Fortress. The Iskrets–Mecha Polyana route is 6.96 kilometers long; its destinations include the medieval church near Mecha Polyana and Iskrets Monastery. The 23.1-kilometer Rebrovo–Bukovets–Leskova route passes Gradishte Fortress, Batuliya Monastery and churches in Ogradishte and Bukovets. Another route, 30.9 kilometers long, leads from Gara Lakatnik to the Trastena and Leskova mountain huts and connects several fortresses with St. Panteleimon Monastery.
The Three Pines Eco-Trail is also part of Svoge’s trail network. In 2024, the municipality reported that the trail had been fully renovated. Bicycles, motorcycles, ATVs and other motorized vehicles are prohibited; check locally for any changes to the rules.
Caves, waterfall and karst
Temnata Dupka Cave lies near Gara Lakatnik. A protected path with railings leads to it; the cave is reported to be approximately 5,000 to 9,000 meters long. The municipality’s karst landscape includes numerous caves and sinkholes, some of which contain stalactites and stalagmites. The world beneath the surface adds to the striking formations of the Iskar Valley.
Skaklya Waterfall freezes in winter and is used for ice climbing. Its valley is enclosed by a horseshoe-shaped limestone rim. The waterfall is connected to the Vazova Eco-Trail, which runs along steep limestone walls. This trail brings landscape and activity together, although its length alone does not convey the terrain: the Eco-Trail’s known 3.22 kilometers include steep climbs and an elevation range of 442 to 933 meters.
Monasteries, churches and local collections
The Seven Thrones Monastery is a cultural monument of national importance with artistic and architectural significance. The name of its church refers to seven small chapels, each with its own altar. The present-day church dates back to the 18th century and stands on the foundations of an older church. Other routes also link hiking trails with historic sites: the trail from Eliseyna leads to the monastery and Latinsko Kale Fortress, while the route from Iskrets to Mecha Polyana includes Iskrets Monastery and the medieval church.
Iskrets Monastery is part of the Sofia Mala Sveta Gora network; it is believed to have existed as early as the 13th century. Its narthex contains 13 scenes depicting the Revelation of John the Theologian. From the main avenue, it is about a 300-meter walk north to the monastery entrance. Votive crosses also tell the story of the municipality: there are hundreds of them, including documented examples from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Svoge’s public collection includes archaeological, ethnographic and numismatic materials, traditional costumes, ceramics and a hand loom. If you would like to visit the collection, check locally for visiting arrangements. It complements the religious and archaeological traces with everyday objects, revealing further aspects of local culture.
Chocolate history and travel information
Svoge’s chocolate tradition began in 1924, when Velizar Peev chose the town for his factory. The factory exhibition “River of Time” covers the history of chocolate making in Bulgaria and the factory’s development. A company profile from 2024 listed more than 171 products, over 40 flavors and distribution in 25 countries. These are company figures tied to that time and offer a glimpse into how production was described then.
The tourist information center is behind Svoge railway station and offers maps, visitor information and material on local attractions. It also provides information on minibus timetables between Svoge, the villages and Sofia, as well as train schedules. Timetables may change, so check them before traveling. The information center’s opening arrangements may also change.
