The Municipality of Kostinbrod brings together the landscapes of the Sofia Basin, the karst western part of Mala Planina, and the Western Balkan Mountains proper. Large parts of the municipality are included in the Natura 2000 network. At the same time, Kostinbrod is part of the Shopi ethnographic region. Its landscape, regional culture and history give the destination several distinct facets to explore, depending on your interests.
Nature and outdoor activities around Kostinbrod
The karst springs of Bezden are a protected natural monument. By Ministerial Order No. RD-550 of 27 June 2022, they were entered in the register of protected areas. The reservoirs also offer opportunities to spend time outdoors: Bistritsa Reservoir in Bezden is well suited to fishing; Bistritsa and Bezden are also options for picnics and relaxing in nature. Conditions and facilities may change, so it is worth checking the local situation before making specific plans.
The municipality has paved roads, forest tracks and unpaved paths suited to different types of cycling. The paved roads are considered to be in comparatively good condition, but you should still check the current condition of any particular route. People climb and walk at the Orlovi Skali rock formation near Gradec. In the wider area around the destination, eco-trails offer opportunities for hiking, cycling and observing wildlife.
Traces of antiquity and the Middle Ages
The late Roman residence of Scretiska in Kostinbrod is associated with Constantine I. As a road station, Scretiska was the first stop west of Serdica on the ancient trans-Balkan diagonal route. The archaeological site includes the Scretiska residence, early Byzantine Kratiscara and a rotunda. It is classified as immovable archaeological cultural heritage of national significance and covers more than 20,000 square metres.
In the area of the village of Petarch, too, the remains of old buildings point to the region’s long history: locals call them the Petarch Monastery. The Shiyakovo Monastery offers another historical connection. Vasil Levski helped establish the Secret Revolutionary Committee in Kostinbrod there in 1871. The monastery also has a recreation area.
Churches and local history
The Church of St Petka, built in 1852, stands in the village of Bogyo. Its frescoes were created by painters from the Debar and Samokov schools. The church is classified as a cultural monument in the second group, of exceptional artistic value. In Kostinbrod, the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius is the largest in the municipality: its foundation stone was laid in 1905, and it was consecrated on 24 May 1907. The two churches offer different points of interest—from the frescoes in Bogyo to the history of a large church building in Kostinbrod.
Village festivals and folklore
The Haidushki Ruchay folklore festival is held every year in early July in the village of Gradec. The programme includes performances by amateur and professional ensembles, orchestras, folklore groups and individual performers. The village festival in Bogyo is another occasion: it takes place on 14 October, Petkovden, and is connected with the feast day of the Church of St Petka. The events therefore take place in different locations and at different times of year. If you plan your trip around a festival, check the dates for the year in question.
Plan your accommodation and get oriented
If you are looking for a hotel in Kostinbrod, you might first consider whether you want to plan your trip around a particular festival or explore the municipality mainly through its cultural and historical sites and landscapes. For travel between settlements, the municipality publishes a timetable that took effect on 1 August 2023. Check the details for your travel date before setting off.
