Anton lies in the southern foothills of the Balkan Mountains. Three distinct themes come together here for a stay: hikes toward the mountain ridge, cultural sites in the village, and natural attractions in the surrounding area. If you are planning a trip, it is worth choosing your main focus first. The hike to the Planinski izvori hut offers a specific time frame; the church and chapel add a cultural dimension, while Peperudata and Jemina Rock are nearby destinations. This makes it easy to plan a visit to Anton around your preferred mix of activity, local history, and nature.

Balkan Mountain Scenery

Part of Anton Municipality lies within Central Balkan National Park; the Vartopa protected area lies entirely within the municipality. These two locations provide a sense of the protected natural areas around Anton.

Hiking: Hut and Ridge

Anton is one of the starting points for the hike to the Planinski izvori hut on the ridge of the Balkan Mountains in the Gyoldzhuka area. The hike from Anton’s municipal center to the hut takes three and a half hours; the time required may vary depending on trail conditions. The route is marked. Even so, check conditions on the ground before setting out.

Another hiking route leads from Divchovoto via the Elprom, Momina Polyana, and Planinski Izvori huts to Anton. A traditional hike along the mountain ridge is also held annually in Anton. This ridge hike is a recurring event in addition to the individual routes and may influence your choice of travel dates.

Church, Chapel, and Traditions

The Church of Sveti Prorok Iliya in Anton is listed as a cultural monument of artistic value. Its iconostasis doors and some of its icons are particularly noteworthy. The feast day of Sveti Iliya is an annual traditional cultural event in Anton. For both annual occasions—the feast day and the ridge hike—check the specific dates for your intended year of travel.

The St George Chapel above Anton was consecrated in 2007 on the site of a small monastery. At the exit from the village toward Karlovo, on international road E871, there is also a memorial fountain for Todor Patakov, a deceased Bulgarian border guard who was from Anton.

Nearby Natural Attractions

Peperudata Waterfall is located between Anton and Klisura along the Podbalkan road. It is part of Central Balkan National Park and is just under 20 meters high. There are parking areas on both sides of the road; check local conditions before stopping. Jemina Rock is also nearby. A local legend links it to a woman who leapt from a high cliff.
