Roman steles in a churchyard, a medieval fortress on a steep ridge and fishing opportunities at a reservoir show how varied an exploration of the municipality of Bozhurishte can be. These examples are spread across several localities in the municipality. When planning, it is therefore worth deciding how to balance history, nature and activities.
Roman Traces and Historic Sites
Roman steles were discovered in the courtyard of the Church of St George the Victorious (“Sveti Georgi Pobedonosets”) in Prolesha. An unpaved Roman road was also identified south of Prolesha. Prolesha is also said to be the site of a hoard of Roman coins, described as the largest in Bulgaria.
The medieval fortress “Kaleto” is located in the area of Hrabarsko, at the site of Sovat, on a steep ridge. It has not been developed for tourism or designed for visitors. By contrast, the Church of St George (“Sveti Georgi”) in Hrabarsko is mentioned as a stop offering panoramic views and an extensive park. Rosoman is home to an old, restored church dedicated to Saint Nedelya.
The municipality also has a site connected with aviation history: an existing building on the grounds of the former “Bozhurishte” airfield is described as Sofia’s first airfield.
Nature, Park and Garden
The municipality of Bozhurishte includes 63.2 hectares of the “Meshtitsa” Natura 2000 protected zone, in the areas of Delyan and Zlatusha. Several valuable habitats of European importance are protected there. Both pine and deciduous forests can be found in the area of Herakovo.
“Orlite” Park is one of the key tourist sites in Bozhurishte’s core tourist area. “Bozhura” Garden has a children’s playground and food and drink establishments; individual businesses may change. Protected habitats and forests thus sit alongside specific park and garden amenities as distinct aspects of the municipality.
Horse Riding and Fishing
At the “General Krum Lekarski” riding centre in the town of Bozhurishte, horse-riding enthusiasts can take part in equestrian sports and training sessions. If you plan to take part, check the current booking options in advance.
“Hrabarsko” Reservoir offers fishing opportunities in the area of Hrabarsko. Check local rules and access before going fishing. Horse riding with training sessions and fishing at the reservoir are two different activity highlights.
Getting Around and Arrival
The municipality’s 2024–2028 tourism programme divides the municipality along the Sofia–Bozhurishte–Breznik and Sofia–Kalotina corridors into central, northern and southern tourism zones. For travel between the town of Bozhurishte and Sofia, the programme lists bus route 54; it describes the timetable as sparse and inconvenient. Check the current timetable before travelling.
When looking for a holiday rental, choosing a location is a sensible first step: the sites mentioned are spread across several localities in the municipality. Decide which stops are important for your stay and match your preferred location to your travel arrangements.
