The ancient city of Nessebar lies on a rocky peninsula on the Black Sea. Its setting makes a striking introduction to Bulgaria: beyond the coast are places steeped in history and landscapes of great variety. The country has ten sites inscribed on the World Heritage List. When planning a trip, you can explore both archaeological remains and natural areas.
Ancient Places and Stone Heritage
The ancient city of Nessebar includes an acropolis, a Temple of Apollo, an agora and a wall from the Thracian fortifications. The city also contains the Stara Mitropolia Basilica and a medieval fortress. Here, monuments from antiquity and the Middle Ages can be found within the same historic site. The view takes in everything from urban complexes to religious and military structures.
The Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo complex was created in the valley of the Roussenski Lom River, near the village of Ivanovo. It includes churches, chapels, monasteries and cells carved into the rock. It is not a single building but a complex featuring several forms of religious architecture.
The Thracian Tomb of Sveshtari dates to the 3rd century BC and was discovered near the village of Sveshtari. Its polychrome caryatids combine half-human and half-plant forms, while painted wall scenes complement the tomb’s architecture. Those interested in ancient art will find a striking combination of figurative design and wall painting here.
Mountain Landscapes and Birdlife
The Pirin National Park’s varied limestone mountain landscapes alternate with glacial lakes, waterfalls and caves. Coniferous forests cover most of the park. The high-altitude area lies mostly above 2,000 metres; there, alpine meadows, scree slopes and peaks define the landscape. The national park has 22 approved and marked hiking trails.
The Srebarna Nature Reserve offers a different natural highlight: a freshwater lake covering more than 600 hectares, on the adjacent bank of the Danube. Almost 100 bird species breed there, many of them rare or endangered. This comparison can help you choose the landscapes you want to include in your trip: Pirin offers high-altitude scenery and marked trails, while Srebarna offers a lake and nesting birds.
Museums, Crafts and Remembrance
The archaeology department of the Panagyurishte History Museum displays replicas of the Panagyurishte Gold Treasure. The treasure consists of nine vessels and dates from the 4th to the 3rd century BC. A reconstructed 19th-century marketplace introduces a different subject: it showcases regional crafts such as goldsmithing, coppersmithing and carpet-making. Archaeological objects and a reconstructed world of crafts offer two distinct ways to explore the past.
The National Hristo Botev Museum in Kalofer preserves and displays personal belongings, documents, publications and works by Hristo Botev, as well as other material about his life, family and associates. The complex includes a memorial museum in his birth house, an exhibition hall and monuments to Hristo Botev and Ivanka Boteva.
The Shipka National Park-Museum is located on Shipka Peak in the Balkan Mountains. It includes 26 monuments, as well as reconstructed positions, artillery batteries and shelters used by the defenders of the Shipka Pass during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. The memorial park thus connects historical events with visible structures and monuments.
Several museum exhibitions are presented on the grounds of Rila Monastery. As the availability of individual offerings may change, check which exhibitions are currently open before your visit. At the Etar Open-Air Museum, you can hike along three eco-trails: Etar–Sokolski Monastery, Etar–Mount Shipka, and an eco-trail through Bulgarka Nature Park.
