Iskrets can be discovered from different perspectives: the Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God offers insights into art history and religion, while the spring cave and hiking route add a focus on nature and outdoor activities. Short excursions on the mountain slopes and meadows above the village are also possible. A simple distinction can help with planning your trip: the monastery, parish church and historic votive sites tell the story of religious heritage; the cave and trails offer a different focus.

Monastery art and architecture

The Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God is designated a cultural monument of national importance. Its significance lies both in its artistic value and in its architectural and structural design. The narthex—the vestibule of the monastery church—contains 13 scenes depicting the Book of Revelation. Their number and clearly defined biblical theme make the church interior a specific point of interest for anyone interested in sacred art and iconographic programs.

Another architectural feature is the seven-sided baptistery-confessional building. It is considered the only freestanding baptistery built in a Bulgarian monastery. Its heptagonal shape offers a second specific way to appreciate the monastery’s architecture, alongside the scenes in the narthex.

Religious history in the village and its surroundings

A Psalter, or book of Psalms, bearing engravings comes from the monastery and was printed in Venice in the 16th century. The book’s origin in Iskrets is thus linked to a history of printing that reaches as far as Venice.

Religious heritage has also shaped the history of the village beyond the monastery. In 1921, there were around 50 to 60 votive sites in Iskrets and the surrounding fields and hills, dedicated to various saints. The parish church in Iskrets celebrates its annual feast on December 6, the day of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. If you would like to include this date in your travel plans, check the specific celebration dates in advance.

Hiking route, excursions and cave

The Iskrets–Mecha Polyana hiking route follows an old Ottoman road that begins west of the Tsar Ferdinand I Sanatorium. Its elevation ranges from 527 to 1,029 metres. The historic road and this elevation range give the route its own character; for shorter outings, the mountain slopes and meadows immediately above Iskrets are another option. Short excursions are possible there.

Another natural attraction is Dushnika Cave, also known as Iskrets Cave. The spring cave is 877 metres long, lies near the Iskrets–Breze road and is about one kilometre from the edge of the village. Access is free, but special equipment is required to enter the cave; it also contains two siphons. These conditions should be considered together when planning your visit and distinguish the cave from a short excursion on the slopes and meadows above the village.

Local history and getting there

The Tsar Ferdinand I Sanatorium in Iskrets was founded in 1908 as an anti-tuberculosis sanatorium. It was established on the basis of a decree and a donation from Tsar Ferdinand I. The sanatorium is also a specific landmark for the route to Mecha Polyana, which begins to its west.
