When looking for accommodation in Troyan, you can also consider the wider Troyan destination when planning your trip. There, ceramics and traditional crafts are cultural themes, alongside church art and archaeological history. Natural history collections and hiking trails offer different highlights.
Ceramics and Crafts in Troyan
The Museum of Folk Craft Arts and Applied Arts in Troyan presents its craft exhibitions across ten halls. They include pottery, woodcarving, metalwork and weaving. The ceramics collection traces the development of local ceramics from the Ceramic Neolithic through the Bulgarian National Revival and also covers the Troyan School of Ceramics. Tools, moulds, uses and decorative techniques provide further insight into the finished works.
The museum offers visits to a pottery workshop, as well as demonstrations of icon painting and woodcarving. Advance arrangements may be required. If you would like to include these activities in your plans, confirm the arrangements in advance.
A different perspective on religious and architectural art can be found at the Church of St. Paraskeva–Petka in the centre of Troyan. Built in 1835, it is still an active church and is considered a cultural and architectural monument. Its interior, entirely covered with frescoes, and its carved iconostasis are central to its art-historical significance.
More Cultural Sites in the Troyan Destination
The National Exhibition of Arts and Crafts in Oreshak displays folk art objects created by established masters from all of Bulgaria’s ethnographic regions. In its hands-on areas, visitors can try regional crafts such as pottery, woodcarving, pyrography and weaving. The exhibitions offer a different perspective from the historical ceramics collection in Troyan; dates and programmes may change.
The Troyan Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God is located near Oreshak, on the banks of the Cherni Osam River. It is considered the largest monastery in the Balkan Mountains and Bulgaria’s third-largest spiritual centre. The monastery church has frescoes by Zahari Zograf dating from the Bulgarian National Revival. Sostra offers another focus on history: this Roman fortress was the sixth road station on the Via Trayana, which connected Lower Moesia with Thrace. The ancient road passed through Troyan Municipality. There is a paved road and a car park next to the fortress; infrastructure details may change.
A culinary tradition is also part of the region’s character: the annual “Chukan Bob s Kopriva i Horo se Izviva” festival in Cherni Osam combines beans with nettles, music and dancing. Exact festival dates and the programme may change.
Nature Attractions and Hikes
The Natural History Museum in Cherni Osam houses more than 700 exhibits and displays over 25 species of taxidermied mammals. It also presents the region’s wildlife and natural attractions in the Balkan Mountains and the nearby Central Balkan National Park. A panoramic hiking trail leads from the National Exhibition of Arts and Crafts in Oreshak, through the Sadina landscape, to the Natural History Museum and the mountain guide school in Cherni Osam. The route passes through mixed beech forest; check current trail conditions before setting out.
The Steneto Biosphere Reserve is in the area of Troyan Municipality and is part of Central Balkan National Park. Nature attractions that can be visited there include the Raychova Dupka, Ptichata Dupka and Kumanitsa caves, the Markova Dupka rock arch, and waterfalls in Cher nokozhi and Konski Dol. Access restrictions may apply in some areas; check the current park rules before your visit.
Different timings and preparation requirements are given for hikes from Chiflik. A 3.5-kilometre paved road leads from Chiflik to the Haydushka Pesenn hut; from there, a marked hiking trail takes 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach the Kozya Stena hut. The route includes areas at risk of avalanches in winter. Another mountain route leads from the Smesite landscape near Cherni Osam to the Ambaritsa hut, takes three hours and requires good mountaineering preparation. These details refer to different routes; check local conditions before planning a specific hike. Several other trails from Chiflik lead into Central Balkan National Park and to the Kozya Stena Reserve.
Chiflik has several warm mineral springs with temperatures of up to 55°C. If you plan to use a particular pool or spa facility, check its current conditions in advance.
